Pirates and Devil Conquer All at the 2006 AVN Awards

Pirates made land at the Venetian Hotel for the 2006 AVN Awards last night and pretty much wasted the competition in the video feature categories. But it shared the spotlight with The New Devil in Miss Jones, an almost equally big winner on the film side.

A Digital Playground-Adam & Eve co-production and one of the costliest adult movies ever produced, Pirates captured 11 awards, the first single feature to score in double digits since The Fashionistas in 2002. Vivid Entertainment Group’s Devil, a remake of one of the classic X-rated films, won nine prizes.

The awards show played to a turned-on and appreciative crowd that packed the huge hotel ballroom. Co-hosts were Digital Playground contract star Jesse Jane and comedian Greg Fitzsimmons, who pleased his audience with a rowdy, pornocentric monologue.

Pirates took home prizes for Best Video, Best DVD, and Best High Definition Production, plus Best Director, Video, three acting awards and four others. Devil‘s awards included Best Film, Best Director, film, screenplay, cinematography and two performances.

Runners up in the film and video feature categories, respectively, were Red Light District Films’ Dark Side and Wicked Picture’s Camp Cuddly Pines Powertool Massacre, with five awards each.

Petite McKenzie Lee, a Club Jenna contract girl, won the coveted Best New Starlet award. The Brit brunette, flaunting her patriotism in a low-cut Union Jack dress, saluted her boss. “Jenna Jameson, you’re the best. I love you so much!”

Katsumi, the beautiful European anal queen, repeated as Foreign Female Performer of the Year. And her Virtual Katsumi brought Acid Rain its first AVN Award, as Best Interactive DVD. She also won Best Anal Sex Scene, Video, for the third consecutive year, this time for her work with Manuel Ferrara (her date of the evening) in Red Light District’s Cumshitters.

“It was easy with Manuel,” she purred, to which Ferrara replied, “It’s very rare to hear a young lady say it’s easy to do it with me.”

Ferrara also repeated his win from last year as Male Performer of the Year, with red-haired Audrey Hollander, looking exquisite in white, scoring as Female Performer of the Year.

The prestigious Reuben Sturman Award was presented to Rob Black and Lizzy Borden of Extreme Associates 2.0 by attorney F. Louis Sirkin for “the courageous court battles” they’ve waged against federal obscenity charges. Black, in an emotional speech, apologized for his “shitty” past behavior to people in the industry and vowed, “We will take this to the Supreme Court. I will never cop a plea, never sell out this industry. And we will win.”

Pirates dominated the video acting awards. Evan Stone took Best Actor for his tour de force performance as a hapless pirate hunter, sharing honors with his co-star Janine, who strode to the stage with the assertiveness of the pirate queen she portrayed so memorably. Tommy Gunn won Best Supporting Actor, Video, for his work as the evil buccaneer captain.

Pirates’ one sex scene award went to Janine and co-host Jane for their heated girl-girl encounter.

In film, Savanna Samson and Jenna Jameson took acting honors their lead and supporting performances, respectively, in The New Devil in Miss Jones, and for their girl-girl sex scene in the movie. Randy Spears won twice, for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, Film, for Wicked Pictures’ Eternity and Red Light’s Dark Side.

Jameson, looking spectacular in big blonde hair and a fuschia-hued mega-dress, was named Crossover Star of the Year, and her Jenna Loves Pain, from Club Jenna/Vivid, won Best Specialty Release, BDSM.

She also presented two awards with Nikita Denise. One, for Best Oral Sex Scene, Video, went to Kimberly Kane, Jassie and three men in VCA’s Squealer. Kane said she learned by watching Belladonna: “Without her I don’t I’d be able to suck cock the way I do.”

Squealer also won Best All Sex Feature — director Jack the Zipper’s second prize in this category (he won last year for Stuntgirl) — plus Best Group Sex Scene, Video. And Belladonna, incidentally, won Best All-Girl Feature for Belladonna’s Fucking Girls, from Belladonna Entertainment/Evil Angel.

Lexington Steele’s Mercenary Pictures took home two awards, for Best Interracial Release (Lex Steele XXX 5) and Best Ethnic-Themed Series (Black Reign), and Steele and his longtime partner Vanessa Blue announced their upcoming marriage during a presentation with Chi Chi Larue.

Gonzo king Jules Jordan won for Best Gonzo Release (Slut Puppies), Best Ethnic-Themed Video, Asian (Invasian! 2), and Best Anal-Themed Feature (Ass Worship 7), but his Evil Angel labelmate Joey Silvera took home Best Gonzo Series for his long-running Service Animals.

Red Light District’s 1 Night in China was named Top-Selling Title of 2005 and Vivid’s The Masseuse Top-Renting Title.

A new category, the Hall of Fame Founders Award, was introduced by AVN President Paul Fishbein with the words, “We must not forget the history of our business.” Of the three adult industry trailblazers honored, one, VCX founder Norman Arno, is deceased, but the others, Caballero founder Noel Bloom and Hustler founder Larry Flynt, accepted their tribute on stage. Flynt’s impassioned sermonette on free speech brought the audience to its feet.

Musical entertainment was provided by Capitol recording artists Hedley and rapper DJ Quik, who brought all the porn girls on stage to dance and sprayed a lucky few with champagne.

Comic relief was also provided by Mark Stone’s often hilarious video interludes, notably a takeoff on BrokebackMountain with super-agent Marc Spiegler’s bizarre cameo appearance bringing down the house.
