The Other Hollywood Tour Arrives in LA

The authors of The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored History of the Porn Film Industry will make an appearance on Tuesday at Book Soup on the Sunset Strip as their nationwide signing tour kicks into full swing.

Legs McNeil, Jennifer Osborne and Peter Pavia will be doing readings and signing copies of the publication starting at 7 p.m. at Book Soup at 8818 Sunset Blvd., in West Hollywood. Then the group will make a 7:30 p.m. visit on Wednesday to Barnes & Noble at 16461 Ventura Blvd., in Encino.

Special guests are expected at both appearances and the authors are also planning on attending the exclusive showing of Deep Throat at the Laemmle Theater at 8000 Sunset Blvd., in West Hollywood at 10 p.m. Thursday.

The Other Hollywood book tour on Friday will head to San Francisco to Booksmith, with a stop scheduled for 7 p.m. at 1644 Haight St. They continue on to Powell’s Bookstore in Portland, Ore., at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 28. The tour continues with a stop in Seattle on Wednesday, March 2, when the trio will be available at 7 p.m. at Bailey Coy, followed by an appearance the next evening in the same town at 7 p.m. at University Bookstore.

They’ll be heading to Chicago, New York and points yet to be announced in the coming months promoting what Publisher’s Weekly calls, “A compulsively readable book that perfectly captures the pop culture zeitgeist. But behind the scintillating subject, it’s McNeil’s and Osborne’s skillful technique that elevates this oral history, above the tedium of a courtroom transcript, this is a relentlessly gripping read.”

Judith Regan, publisher of ReganBooks, a division of Harper Collins, declared on Feb. 14 at the launch party at The Sex Museum in New York, “This book is a home run!”

The book went on sale on Feb. 15, when the authors read from the book at KGB in downtown Manhattan before heading to New Haven, Conn., for an appearance at Café Nine where they were joined by a rock-and-roll set performed by Mickey Leigh, brother of Joey Ramone.

McNeil, the co-author of Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, joined in to sing “53rd and 3rd” and some other classic Ramones tunes to a packed house.

AVN senior editor Jared Rutter reviewed the book in the February edition of our magazine and will also talk to the authors for an exclusive interview to be published on www.avn.com later this week.

ReganBooks also published Jenna Jameson’s best-seller, How to Make Love Like a Porn Star, co-written by Neil Strauss, who offered this quote: “A brilliantly constructed, compelling read, The Other Hollywood is not just a chronicle of the making of a dirty empire, but a look deep into the bowels of the American dream. Forget about sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Here are suicides, prison escapes, overdoses, rapes, bestiality, murders, car crashes, orgies, defenestration and castration…It’s a history that’s never been told before, and I doubt will ever be told better.”
