RESEDA, Calif. - Porn stars mingled with mainstream Hollywood Saturday night at New Line Cinema's free screening of Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, shown on a massive outdoor screen right in the heart of where many of the film's key scenes were shot.
The event was hosted by New Line Cinema in celebration of the studio's 40th anniversary and the re-launch of its website, NewLine.com, and was presented by the Rolling Roadshow, a touring exhibition curated by the famous, Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
Anderson himself was in attendance, with significant other Maya Rudolph (of "Saturday Night Live" fame) in tow, as was Harry Knowles, the creator and moderator of mainstream movie fansite Ain't It Cool News, another sponsor of the event.
Asked to come up and say a few words before the film started, Anderson spoke about how great he thought it was that the screening was taking place right down the street from where he lives -- and being shown on film via a projector housed inside a van, to boot -- and how much he was looking forward to "seeing this movie again."
Also brought up to address the crowd was porn's own Kurt Lockwood, director and star of SexZ Pictures' The Real Boogie Nights. Joining him to throw a few DVDs of the X-rated feature out into the crowd were co-stars Jack Lawrence and Tee Reel, with porn hotties Veronica Rayne, Miss Kitty and Megan Monroe.
"We're the real deal," Lockwood said to the audience, "this is what we do for a living, so this movie definitely had a major influence on all of us." He went on to offer a public thank you to Anderson for granting his blessing upon The Real Boogie Nights through Ron Jeremy, who served as a consultant on the original and co-stars in Lockwood's remake.
Also on the scene: mainstream director Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel I & II), JacktheZipper, Belladonna (who viewed the film with husband Aiden from inside their Belladonna Entertainment-plastered Scion SUV), and Real Boogie Nights actors James Bartholet (who plays the non-sex role based on "The Colonel" character) and Ron Jeremy.
Following the screening, guests proceeded to the Kessab Banquet Hall (seen as the Hot Traxx disco in Boogie Nights) for an after-party that included an Armenian dinner and free-flowing cocktails provided by Dewar's White Label.
