Gamma Films Goes '80s With 'Girlcore'

MONTREAL—Gamma Films revives the '80s with with new lesbian anthology Girlcore, out today at Girlcore.com.

The six-part first season of Girlcore, produced under new label AdultTime, "is going to be offered to all the members within AdultTime, which will include all of Girlsway's members, as well as being launched as Girlcore.com to attract new audiences into our ecosystem," Gamma head of production Bree Mills explained.

"This is a series that's been about six months in the making," Mills continued. "I drew my inspiration from a genre of pulp fiction that was very popular in the '50s and '60s—it's often been dubbed 'sexploitation literature' or lesbian pulp novels. For a whole generation of people, it was the only representation that existed out there for what being a gay person was."

The episodes of Girlcore season one are as follows:

The six episodes give nods to various cinematic works of the time period, and are scored with a dreamy synth soundtrack by Canadian artist Pilotpriest.
 
"I took everything that I love about women: their sexuality, their style, and even not sugarcoating away from some of the struggles that we face," Mills said. "This whol series is quite personal to me in terms of ... it kind of encompasses everything that I love."
 
She added, "We've brought together an all-star cast—the best of the best—to tell these stories. I love the '80s—I wanted to re-imagine lesbian pulp novels with an all-star cast, with high production values in the '80s ... and that is what we've brought together—the world of Girlcore."
