At what is undoubtedly adult’s most remarkable and unifying night, Evil Angel Productions and Wicked Pictures took home the evening’s most trophies per company with each company accepting fourteen awards for their excellent product.
In a high energy, fast paced evening hosted by Vivid contract performer Jenna Jameson with comedian Jim Norton, all present shared laughs from Norton’s stylings (which included him claiming he couldn’t get laid in a whorehouse “with chloroform and a bad check”) along with enjoying excellent comedy bits by some of porn’s finest in hilarious “Tips From The Stars” segments. Those present also grooved to opening act The Tubes followed by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz singing their hit, “Get Low” as a wall of nubile porn starlet flesh writhed around them.
It’s all about the Lucite statues, however and the winners accepting their awards were especially jubilant and brief with their comments this year, excluding director Paul Thomas, winner of Best Director-Film for his work on the year’s Best Film, Vivid’s Heart of Darkness.
“The reason I do what I do is because I get opportunities most directors don’t’ have,” Thomas said, thanking Vivid’s Steven Hirsch along with his crew.
Heart of Darkness won five of the nine awards the company received.
Director John Stagliano accepted the award for the Top Renting Tape of 2003 and for Best DVD for last year’s top winner in every category it was nominated in, The Fashionistas and Hustler founder Larry Flynt accepted the Top Selling Tape of 2003 award for Hustlaz: Diary of a Pimp to the immediate ovation of the crowd.
“We should not be repressing sex, we should be celebrating it,” Flynt intoned to the approval of those present, before thanking AVN “for bringing the porn industry out of the gutter”.
Evil Angel’s largest winner of the night, director Jules Jordan took home six awards, thanking his performers and Stagliano for giving him “a chance”.
Male Performer of The Year winner Michael Stefano accepted his award, thanking Red Light District, Platinum X Pictures and “all the beautiful women I have had sex with over the past six years.
Female Performer of The Year Ashley Blue made it up to the stage with the help of JM Productions’ Sandy Steward, making a short deepthroat joke before uncharacteristically quietly accepting the honor.
Wicked’s major victories were split between Best Sex Comedy winner Space Nuts with six and Best Video Feature winner (tied with Adam & Eve’s Rawhide) Beautiful with four.
Space Nuts director used his acceptance speech to declare his love for new wife Nikki Fritz and thank his crew and actors while Beautiful director Michael Raven, who tied for Best Director-Video last year for his work directing Wicked’s Breathless declared, “I’ll take a tie any day.”
The evening closed with the drama Heart of Darkness winning Best Film. Hirsch brought all of the Vivid Girls on stage, saying that the award was not merely for the film but for “the year’s worth of hard work”
From there, the crowd headed off to the evening’s many after-parties including the official AVN one held at The Guggenheim.
