Director Will Ryder Plans Porn: The Musical

CHATSWORTH, Calif. - Sure, others have combined the enchantments of sex and song in the past — Misty Beethoven: The Musical, Swinging in the Rain — but Will Ryder (a.k.a. Jeff Mullen) has a vision he plans to produce for his X-Play studio that he hopes will set the definitive bar for singing, dancing and fucking in one movie.

"It's called Porn: The Musical," Ryder told AVN. "That's what we're going with right now, although we might change it. And although porn musicals have been done before, I have a different approach to this one which I think will really resonate with a wide range of audience."

Prior to entering the adult industry, Ryder worked as a touring musician with mainstream pop acts. He also wrote and produced music for his Britney Rears series and his current LFP/X-play hit Not the Bradys XXX.

"My true passion in life is music," Ryder continued. "Many people think it's naked women, but that's my second passion. I always consider myself a musician first, before everything else, and I wanted to take it to the next level ... I wanted to do something that has really never been done, and that's to deliver a contemporary porn musical."

Ryder said he's been working on the score for his porn musical for eight months. "I get home about 10 o'clock at night, and I watch 'Seinfeld,' then I work on music," he said. "I have a grand piano in my living room, and I write songs and record them ... song fragments, song ideas, whatever it is, a hook, and then I kind of archive it and develop it later, and then once we select the songs and finish writing the script, then I'll go into the studio and produce the tracks for the singers to sing. And then we'll have a huge casting. We're trying to cast some porn stars that can sing; we're not sure how well that's gonna work out."

Of the 15 songs Ryder has written for the movie to date, he said he expects about seven or eight to make it into the final product. As for the storyline, he summarized, "It's basically a real wholesome story of a girl who comes out to Los Angeles to make it as an actress and leaves her boyfriend back in Ohio, and she gets caught up with the wrong crowd and finds herself working in adult film. And she's torn between the exciting life of L.A. — because she's now going to parties and the red carpets, and she is like a celebrity — and her lonely boyfriend who's pining for her back in Ohio. So it's a true love story. With a lot of fucking.

"We're not trying to create anything that hasn't been created before, 'cause really, everything has been done in one form or another," Ryder conceded. "There's nothing that I can come up with that's original. But for me to be interested in a project, I have to have a passion for it, I have to have a little bit of fun with it. So if I know that in two months, I'm going to be shooting the first part of this musical, I'm happy. It's exciting, it gives me something to strive for. It's such a great art form, and it's a forgotten art form in America. And maybe it doesn't belong in porn, but fuck it, I'm going for it."
