LOS ANGELES—Angel Dark tells AVN she never wanted to become famous when she started her adult film career. The humble performer remains true to her roots in the conservative country of Slovakia, where she was born and raised.
“I’m from a small city where everybody knows everybody. They like to talk,” says Dark, who grew up in the town of Michalovce, which is near the border of Ukraine and Poland. “... When the camera comes on the set with the journalist, I run away, straight away. I didn’t want to be known. I want to just do my job and everything, but I didn’t want to present myself like, ‘Oh here I am.’”
But Dark’s stunning looks and hardcore sex scenes have made it practically impossible for her to go unnoticed both inside and outside the porn industry.
“Even if the people recognize me now sometimes I play like it’s nothing,” she says with a laugh. “If they ask me to go to the TV [for an interview] in Slovakia, no way I’m not going.”
The statuesque, 5-foot-10 Dark, who will celebrate her 28th birthday on April 18, is anything but shy when the camera comes on for her scenes. She recently returned to performing after a three-year hiatus in which she stayed busy feature dancing all over Italy. Dark decided to take a break from scenes mainly due to the “sicknesses” that were affecting the European market at the time. Aware of the risks involved in continuing to work in Europe, she chose to do scenes only with her former boyfriend during that period while she discovered her love for dancing. She even secured a contract with Private Media to feature in Spain.
Then Dark, who says she’s always spontaneous with her life, recently felt the urge to return to the industry. So she signed with LA Direct Models for her comeback and traveled to America for the first time in March, quickly getting booked out for her two-month stay. In her first U.S. interview since she began her career in 2002, the reluctant European superstar reveals her thoughts on sexual chemistry, taking long drives and her favorite rock band, among other subjects.
How do you like working in LA so far?
It’s very easy. It is more easy if you know the person and you know the people and you worked for them before.
What made you decide to come back now?
I missed the industry.
What did you miss about it?
Everything, people, everything…I don’t know, I’m that kind of person, I can change my mind like this. ... How fast I can quit the industry, from day by day, is how fast I can come back. [laughs]. With me, no plans because I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen in one month. Maybe I quit the industry in one month. Maybe I quit in two years, who knows? With me, I can’t say 100 percent.
So you’re very spontaneous?
Yeah. A lot depends on my mood. Like the situation of my life, where I am. If I really want something, I get it. Aries are very strong. You want something you get it.
What were you doing for the last three years when you were off?
I was working for feature dance in Italy. Like four-and-a-half years I was working all over Italy. I got contract with Private for feature dance in Spain, pictures, scenes sometimes, but I was pretty busy with dancing.
How do you like feature dancing?
Oh I love it. I love it. I like this one.
Because why?
I’m the boss. [laughs]. I like the people you know. I need to have people for my show. They give me energy.
Where do you live now?
I live in Prague [in the Czech Republic]. But originally I’m from Slovakia.
How long have you been in Prague?
I live in Prague two years or two-and-a-half.
Where did you live before that?
Bratislava [Slovakia]. Six years.
Isn’t that where Diana Doll is from?
She is my good friend. We lived together three years in same apartment.
What made you move from Bratislava to Prague?
Relation. I want to go back to Bratislava. But I signed the apartment for everything, so we will see.
I live in Prague, but Prague for me it’s very nice, it’s very good. But you know, my hard time when I went up from the school I go straight away to the capital city, to Bratislava. All my friends are there and my private life is there. It’s completely different for me. This is my home. Because even in my country where my parents are I feel at home but I feel more at home in Bratislava. This was the huge school of my life. I was there ALL by myself. I have to learn everything by myself, how to fight…nobody there to take care of me. So if I did something wrong, it was in my head to know how to fix it.
So you learned a lot there…
Mmm-hmm. That’s why I love that city because I spend this important time of my life there, you know. I grow up in that city here. [points to her head]
Because when I was with my parents you know they take care of everything. If you are in the school, oh you want to go away, they piss me off all the time but after, you miss that time. Because there is nothing to do, just go to the school because they take care of everything. But then you are by your own. And then you are like, ‘oh, oops, this is the life.’
What made you want to get into the adult movie industry?
I never told about that. I have no idea. Because Slovakia is still conservative and nobody is shooting there so it’s like taboo for the people. …I’m not saying it’s a huge taboo because young people they know exactly what the porn is—movies. But it’s not like Prague or Hungary, the young people they go more easy to porn than Slovakia…Slovakia is still …And then one girl she found me. I was working in the center of the city. [She says], ‘oh, you are so nice, so beautiful,’ bla bla bla. ‘Do you want to shoot the pictures with lingerie?’ Lingerie, mm-hmm. I went to the casting with her and it was not lingerie at all!
Maybe in the beginning for two pictures. [laughs] Because when I opened the magazine I was like, ‘Ahhh. Oh my God, what is this?’ I was shocked. Even she didn’t tell me because she knew how the Slovakia is. She wouldn’t tell me straight away…
Now it’s more different. But the time that I start in the industry it was really conservative. It was impossible to say to the person, ‘oh you are so nice you would be good for porn.’ I would be like, ‘OK, I’m sorry.’ Everybody would go away. Each person will go away.
Who was the girl?
I don’t know if she is still a makeup artist. But she was makeup artist for Pierre Woodman at that time.
So when you found out it was porn, you said I’m going to go for it?
No, I was so angry. Oh Jesus you can’t imagine how angry. Fire sign, Aries. I don’t like it if somebody lies to me. I was like, magazine in my hand and I turn my head and I’m screaming at her, ‘what is this, why didn’t you tell me? I don’t want to do this. Why I’m here. If I knew this I would be not here.’ I said no way, I’m going to leave.
Then they try, they try. And he did it in a good way. He put me in the DVD and I just make presentation of the scenes. So I was talking you know, I didn’t speak English at all so I was just talking. I was talking in the Slovak language some crazy things, they translate after. And you know how it is, they pay you very good, very well and then you’re like oh this was nothing. Easy…Why not?
But the beginning was difficult. I did my first anal on the film. I was shy I didn’t know what to do.
Did you have a lot of sex in your personal life?
I had sex in my personal life. But I was married when I was 18. I lose my virginity. I had sex, but porn is different. If you have sex at home you don’t have like 20 voyeurs in the room.
How would you describe how your sexuality has evolved since that first time on camera?
First time was difficult because I was so shy. I was shy maybe first four times, five times. It’s still something new, there’s people around you. It’s completely different from your private life. And then I don’t know what happened, it was fine. Now I don’t care how many people look at me.
What kind of sex do you like?
Normal. [laughs] Energy. Always I can’t explain this question, never. It’s about chemistry. It’s about two people. I like sometimes more easy, then go a little bit stronger. It depends, how the chemistry is working. Sometimes other people, sometimes they like to have nice, romantic sex, sometimes you like wild sex. … I don’t like this crazy stuff, like too much things. That’s too much for me. Like spitting on the face or double-anal, double-vag or I don’t know what else. This is not going to work. Or you know to try to punch the face of the girl. I hate this way, even for my private life, don’t touch my face….I don’t like pain for example. I don’t like pain and I don’t want to give pain to the people, and I want to enjoy myself you know, so like energy and chemistry and everything. But don’t try to put me down.
After you began doing many movies, I’m sure you became more well known in Europe?
I never want to be known. [laughs] Everything because of my country. And I have still family there. It’s not easy to explain to your parents what you are doing.
Do they know?
They know but they don’t want to talk about it. They know, but they are not asking. …And I’m from a small city where everybody knows everybody. They like to talk…So that’s why I didn’t want to be known.

But you’re OK with that now?
It’s OK now, but still in my country I don’t try to push. Even if the people recognize me now sometimes I play like it’s nothing. [laughs] If they ask me to go to the TV [for an interview] in Slovakia, no way I’m not going.
Is it fun being a star now?
You know I don’t feel like a star. I feel like I was before. I think people they make me. The fans they make you to be star, you know…Sometimes it’s more easy to get a job, or for that it’s easy. People respect you in that industry, but in my private life I don’t feel like star. I have to do everything like other people. [laughs]… I have no chance in my private life to feel like the star. My sister, she explain my position straight away. [laughs]
Dark has one sister, who is four years younger and lives with her in Prague.
How would you describe your personality when you’re not in the movie?
I have very strong head. If I want something I will get it. Or I’m trying to get it. I’m not saying I get it straight away. It is not easy. But if I really want something I will go this way to take it. I’m an easy-going person.
Do you have a hobby?
My huge hobby is driving the car, because I am driving to Italy a lot, or I’m driving to my parents which is so far, it’s like 10 hours by car. I love to stay in car.
What kind of car do you have?
Dodge Caliber…It’s an American car.
How do you stay fit?
Genetics. [laughs]. I’m not kidding. I have to start in the gym but I’m so lazy. Oh Jesus. And also dancing, feature dance helps you. I like to eat.
What’s your favorite food?
Steak. And eggs and bacon, and sweets. Heavy stuff.
What about music, what is your favorite band?
Linkin Park is my favorite band, straight away. I like also pop music, and also like trance music. I don’t like opera. This is the one thing I don’t really like. I like some of everything, which is good, R&B. But my favorite band—favorite—is Linkin Park. I love them. I love their voices.
Do you have a favorite song by them?
Almost every one. I just like them, a lot. Gives me energy. …If I’m in bad mood or something. If I’m in the car and I’m in bad mood I just put in CD of Linkin Park. They have extreme voices. I’m that person. Nothing in the middle with my life…I’m somewhere in extreme, not normal. I like extreme situation.
Do you ever watch yourself in the movie?
No. Pictures yes, movie no. Because then I will check, ‘oh my makeup is good. Oh I did that. Oh this was not good,’ so…It is different if you are in the industry then to watch your movies. Some people they do, no problem. But me, sure I will check everything. The chest, the nails, makeup, the face expression. I won’t watch it, it’s better…Fans has to watch, you know. I’m doing this for the fans.
Who is your favorite performer?
The guy, you mean? Oh, I have a lot of favorite guys.
Tell me.
I can’t say the name of the guy because then in two minutes I will say another 10 names…I really can’t say who is my favorite.
What about a favorite director?
I like to work in Europe when Toni Ribas is shooting for Private. I like to work with him a lot…In America I like American companies so it’s like. …I don’t want to put somebody, this is my favorite.
If you ask me my favorite for girl/girl scene I will tell you…but I grow up with the guys. I like to stay in guys’ group because I’m like little boy inside. I feel more comfortable around boys because if they don’t like something they tell you straight away. I’m the same. If I don’t like something I’m a very straight person. Some people they can get it. I like the way how the guys are because they will tell you straight away. That’s me.
But for the girls I love my best friend. She’s my best friend, Jane Darling. And I also like to work with Tarra White and also Diana [Doll], when she was in Europe.
Do you remember how you spent your first paycheck for porn?
I don’t remember, Jesus.
What about your most recent one?
What I got? Shoes. I’m sure it was shoes. I’m crazy for shoes. Sometimes I never wear them but I have them at home. My sister is like, where are you, shopping for shoes again! You are not normal. Shoes and dresses, but I’m always like the boy, [wearing] jeans, t-shirt and tennis shoes. … Always in the car. I can’t drive in the heels.
What is your dream, or your goal five, 10 years from now?
My big dream was working for criminal police or criminal lawyer. But I really don’t know. It depends how my life is, what’s happening in my life with the situation. Feature dance also, I was never thinking about feature dancing. One day they ask me and I say ‘OK, I can try.’ I tried, I love it and I’m dancing on tour and I got contract for Spain. … People might think I’m stupid that I don’t know my future but I’m like...
You know you live only once and to do the plans and just follow the plans …how you will feel afterwards if you didn’t follow some plans. If you didn’t get it then you spend how many years…If I don’t like something I say straightaway ‘no.’ If I like the idea, then I say ‘OK I try.’
What do you think of Los Angeles so far?
I love it. In the movies it’s more busy. If you need to go somewhere you take the car and you go to the busy places. But if you’re at home, everything is quiet around….Oh my God, my dog would love it here. ... I’m crazy for the dogs. I love dogs. I love animals.
What kind of dog you have?
Mix. He’s Italian mix from Italy. Benito. He’s almost three years old.
