Alyx Star on Girlfriends Films, Being Her Own Boss & Performing

A version of this feature appears in the October issue of AVN magazine. Click here for the digital edition.

Alyx Star came into adult with a professional edge.

The enterprising native of San Jose—who turned 23 in September—owned and operated her own skin care spa in Portland, Oregon, prior to making her porn debut in 2019.

A licensed esthetician, Star says the experience of being her own boss at such a young age has solidified her confidence as she navigates the adult industry, where she is well on her way to becoming a force.

“Honestly, I think it helped so much because our name is such a brand and a business on its own, too,” Star says. “It’s tough running a business. You’re the front desk person, the accountant. You’re the person giving the service. There’s a lot to it.”

But Star so far has proven to be mature beyond her years, impressing producers and directors alike across the industry en route to 60-plus scenes and counting.

Girlfriends Films, in particular, recognized Star’s talents, signing her to a six-month contract to do all her girl/girl scenes exclusively for their powerhouse studio, while she continues building her profile with boy/girl work for other top production companies such as Brazzers, Reality Kings, New Sensations, Naughty America and more.

Star, who books through Motley Models, says her adult industry journey has been everything she could’ve imagined.

“I really love it,” Alyx tells AVN. “I’ve met some of the most open-minded and accepting people. I feel like it’s a cool way to express myself. It’s weird because it’s on camera for the world to see but it feels like it’s in a judgment-free zone—which is not what I expected getting into it. I thought there would be a lot more negativity but it’s been really positive so far.”

Star made her first appearance with Girlfriends Films in Bad Lesbian 13—leaving enough of an impression that she has now been called upon for some of GFF‘s most popular series including Lesbian TrianglesLesbian House Hunters, and the most awarded lesbian series of all time, Women Seeking Women.

“I love females,” Alyx admits. “I’ve shot with Girlfriends Films quite a few times and we like each other and work well together. … I think it also helps that I really like girls. Not every girl doing girl/girl really likes girls. So I think that shows on camera that I’m into it.”

Star flirted with adult at 18, engaging in some discussions with Motley. Ultimately, she decided to wait and proceeded to open her spa. When she was 21—sometime in November 2019— she reached out to Motley again and asked if they still had interest in representing her.

The answer was an emphatic, “absolutely.”

She spoke with Motley president Dave Rock and agent Ryan Kona by phone a few times and then traveled to Los Angeles a few weeks later.

“I flew out the week before Christmas and did my first few scenes," Star recalls. "Then I went back home and I thought it was going to be just that week. I wanted to just try it—just to like check it off my bucket list—and I really liked it.

“And I was so shocked at how cool and amazing Dave and Ryan were. I had seen so many documentaries and all this bad stuff about agents in this industry and they totally were the opposite of all the negative things I’ve heard.

“So that made me want to keep doing it. I was treated so well on set and I really liked it and I was shocked that people really treated you like you were there for a job—which you are. And I get that now, but I didn’t realize that at first.”

Motley's Kona tells AVN he was glad Alyx was so thoughtful about making the move.

“A girl waiting for the right moment is so much better than her jumping into this and possibly making the wrong decision, which we never want,” Kona says. “It’s not just me saying that as an agent but me as human doesn’t want somebody making a rash decision or doing something they might regret later.

“So for Alyx to think about it for two or three years—or whatever time she took—made me respect her a whole helluva lot.

“There is a special quality to her. Coming in at 18 can be very, very hard. … So for her to come in at 21 and be more mature and have a great mindset about what she wants to accomplish, I couldn’t be happier. Even at 18, she was so smart and we could tell she had a great head on her shoulders. We love that about her. She sets an example for a lot of the other girls.”

Star says sometimes she watches her scenes—such as the one she did for Glenn King’s MeanBitches.com.

“It was a silly one but I had so much fun filming it that I wanted to watch it and put it on my big TV in the living room and watch it with friends,” she says. “It was so funny because I’m like stomping on the guy’s face and it’s totally not what I normally do.”

Even though she was born and raised in the Bay Area, she considers Portland, Oregon, home after living there for seven years before moving to LA in April.

“I didn’t really do high school. My high school had an option to test out. So I tested out when I was 16 and then I moved out like a few days after that. I moved to Oregon by myself,” Alyx says.

The reason she chose Oregon was because it only was about a six-hour drive from the Bay Area and she didn’t want to be too far away from family.

“So I was like that seems as fitting as any and it was a very like hippie, cool town and it was a good place to start life,” Alyx reasons.

If one spends any amount of time with Star, it’s easy to see why she keeps getting invited back to sets. Aside from her obvious physical attributes, she has an easy smile, cute laugh and a healthy sense of humor.

Alyx says her first job was mixing smoothies at Jamba Juice when she was 16. They wanted to promote her to manager but she wasn’t 18. So Alyx says they asked her to get emancipated from her parents.

“It was really weird. I was like I love my parents. I quit after that,” she says.

“And then I worked at a Dutch Bros Coffee stand for a few months. Oh and then I managed an apartment complex. That was my first adult job—when I was 17.”

Star says she was supervising adults who were three times her age at the apartment building. In fact at just about every job so far she has demonstrated leadership qualities.

“I think I just grew up quick or maybe I just carry myself well,” Alyx says. “I carry no drama. I don’t involve myself in it… I didn’t go to high school so I never had drama or anything along those lines and I noticed just from observation there’s a lot of that in this industry.

“That something I avoid at all costs.”

Star could not be happier with her hot start, but she is keeping her eyes on the prize.

“If things go according to plan and are progressing like they are now I want to retire in Costa Rica. I want to retire when I’m 30,” she reveals. “And it’s really doable in Costa Rica. So I have a plan to make that happen and the adult world is a part of it.”
