XPW Inaugural Ends in Choke-Slam Melee

Slam Melee

The inaugural of XPW Wrestling Saturday night at the Reseda Country Club proved that, just as the road to heaven, the highway to hell is paved with good intentions. AC-DC's "Highway to Hell" was the entrance theme for XPW's "Big Surprise" of the evening - none other than Big Dick Dudley, formerly of the Dudley's of the ECW wrestling league which is based out of New York/Philadelphia. The fledgling XPW fancies itself as a West Coast version of ECW but with more "extreme" going for it. And it may be right judging by the ratio of blood, body slams, broken tables and busted cars tallied by the end of the evening.

XPW impresario Rob Black was keeping Dudley under wraps for weeks in order to set up Dudley's on-going presence in the league which will be considerable, judging by the fact that Dudley has already challenged XPW franchise/pretty boy Damien Steel to a steel cage match for August 27 at the Reseda Country Club.

Playing to a near capacity house that featured many attendees from the porn world in the audience [we got to chat with Herschel Savage, Jef Hickey and Sean Michaels' sister, Sandy, for instance] the event got coverage by Los Angeles' Channel 7. But even Black, who played the trump card with a big name grappler's unscheduled appearance, was victim of the surprise element. XPW also hoped to debut the Ultimate Fighting Championship's "Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz. Ortiz had cracked a rib the night previous against Frank Shamrock, WWF Ken Shamrock's brother. Ortiz is now rescheduled for the August 27 XPW show.

Jasmin St. Claire was beamed live via satellite from the Milwaukee Metalfest where she was hosting, and St. Claire made her presence felt throughout the night with acidic Jasmin-style commentary about the goings-on, particularly Kristi Myst's selection as "Queen of Xtreme". St. Claire questioned how such a contest could take place "when the real (expletive deleted) Queen of Xtreme" wasn't even in the building. Hell broke loose when Tom Byron and Ashlyn Gere came on to host the beauty contest portion of the event at the end of the evening. Myst won crowd acclaim over such "contenders" as a woman whose chest resembled twin beer kegs. Steel and his bodyguard Basil began making nice-nice with Krysti while Jasmin berated the decision. Steel's ego-infested presence apparently didn't sit well with Dudley, either, who, not only got into Steel's face, but chokeslammed Krysti when she got into the middle of the fracas. Dudley's maneuvers prompted a locker room-clearing brawl where, one-by-one, Dudley choke slammed virtually the entire XPW organization.

Besides the Aug. 27 event, the league will feature a second show in Bakersfield, the following night, Aug. 28. Complete results can be found on the XPW website xpwrestling

Back in Cincinnati

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water in Cincinnati, comes another obscenity prosecution case. Months after the Larry Flynt spectacle died down, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that, for the third time in a year, a Butler County jury will be asked to decide whether a group of adult videos is legally obscene.

The trial of a Millville video store owner Peter Tomaino and his two clerks begins today before Common Pleas Judge Keith Spaeth. VIP Video Store owner Tomaino and two store clerks, Billie J. Doan and Caroletha Geter, are charged with three counts of pandering obscenity. The charges stem from the purchase of three videos, Best of Freaks, Orgymania and Sinderella She Male in February 1998 by an undercover sheriff's deputy and an undercover Hamilton police officer.

According to the Enquirer, Tomaino and Doan, in separate trials last year, were convicted of misdemeanor charges of disseminating material harmful to a juvenile. They were, however, acquitted of felony charges of disseminating obscene material to a juvenile. Each received a six-month suspended sentence, 120 hours of community service and a $1,000 fine.

H. Louis Sirkin, attorney for the defendants, wants to use the favorable verdicts in the first two trials to influence this week's trial. Sirkin asked the judge to allow him to show the videos from the first two trials to the jury of the third trial.

"I think it shows that juries have already indicated these kinds of videos are acceptable," said Sirkin, who represented Larry Flynt in his recent Hamilton County obscenity case that ended in a plea bargain. "It indicates a tolerance of sexually explicit videos."

Assistant Prosecutor Dan Gattermeyer opposes allowing the previous trials' videos to be shown to the jury in the third trial.

"The other movies aren't comparable to the ones we have in this case," Gattermeyer said. "We think the movies in this trial should be judged on their own." Judge Spaeth agreed with Gattermeyer and decided to bar the previous trials' videos from this trial. Sirkin said he will keep trying to have them admitted. The verdicts in the previous two trials should have settled the obscenity issue in Butler County and eliminated the need for two more trials, Sirkin said.

"My personal feeling is that Butler County would be better off settling their jail space problems," Sirkin said. "What does it prove if these next two trials come out differently than the first two? It would be 24 people against 24 people."

A fourth Butler County pornography trial is scheduled for Aug. 26 before Judge Matthew Crehan. That case involves Millville Video. Millville Video Inc. is charged with two counts of pandering obscenity. Millville is a village just west of Hamilton.

Russ Meyer's Girlfriend Convicted of Assault; To Be Sentenced Today

Debra Angela Masson, aka Melissa Mounds, girlfriend of famed director Russ Meyer has been convicted of battery and elder abuse. A jury last week found Masson, 39, guilty of three counts of beating Meyer, 77, at his Hollywood Hills home earlier this year.

At about 1:40 a.m. May 26, prosecutors charged, Masson attacked Meyer as he was sleeping on a couch. He awoke during the beating and later required treatment at a hospital.

"Basically the injuries consisted of abrasions and contusions to the forehead," said Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney Karine Philips, who prosecuted the case. "He was bleeding pretty significantly from the head. He had a black, swollen eye." Although Masson claimed at trial to have been acting in self-defense, prosecutors showed photos of her taken the day of and day after the attack in which "she did not have any visible injuries," Philips said.

Masson will be sentenced today in Hollywood Municipal Court. She faces a maximum of three years in jail and up to $18,000 in fines. Masson must also obey a criminal protective order that requires her to keep 100 yards from Meyer at all times. Under the terms of the order, her only contact with Meyer -- her off-again, on-again boyfriend for the past 14 years -- can be through an attorney.

Meyer, in recent years, has suffered several small strokes.

"What makes it particularly egregious is ... that very frequently she would belittle him about his memory being gone and his mind going," Philips said. "It seems she was pretty much counting on the fact that he wouldn't be able to remember what happened to him."

Meyer's films are filled with countless big-breasted women, and Masson, who has roots in Ohio, was true to type. Under the stage name Melissa Mounds, Masson starred in Flesh Gordon Meets the Cosmic Cheerleaders (1989) and Cats Will Be Cats (1988).

"She apparently had a career in adult films, adult entertainment," Philips confirmed. Fittingly enough, Masson met Meyer in Las Vegas. But now, their relationship appears doomed.

"He's pretty scared of her," Philips said. "There was evidence of a prior incident where she had again sent him to the hospital because she had smashed his hand with a rock."

The Metro Global Media Controversy

Randy Kaplan addresses Luke Ford: "Dear Luke: I appreciate your resurrecting the quotation from my AVN story about Metro going public from nearly five years ago. The paragraph you quoted remains my personal favorite quotation from all my years in porn journalism, and I am still proud of the prose and the sentiment. If Metro had fulfilled its promise, it would be all the more true. Public companies have to adhere to certain legal standards of disclosure, and publicly-owned adult companies can be a factor in public acceptance of adult entertainment, so I continue to think that this is a good thing.

"That is the argument in the abstract, however, and I think everyone would agree that both individual and corporate citizens should also adhere to certain standards of conduct as well, and if they do not, it doesn't reflect well on the industry from which they spring, nor does it help public acceptance of the industry. This is painfully obvious. What is not so painfully obvious is whether you or anyone else has credible evidence of some of the allegations you make about corrupt or criminal activity.

"If memory serves correctly, Grant Thornton is now the third CPA firm to resign the Metro assignment. I have not read the Globe article, but if you are quoting the article and the Grant Thornton spokesman accurately, Kenny Guarino's ostensible presence in decision-making is a matter of concern. As we all know, Mr. Guarino cannot serve as a board member of a publicly-owned company, due to his felony conviction. In turn, a publicly-owned company cannot allow him to serve in a similar behind-the-scenes role without the official title, and they cannot allow him to take a role in senior management, officially or unofficially, without prior and concurrent disclosures, and at great risk to the company's legal status.

"My major personal objection to your use of my prose, Luke, is that it ignores a very simple fact: nearly every public statement I made since, including frequent statements printed in AVN, make it very clear that I regarded Metro's performance as a public company as dismal in the extreme, judging it simply on business and financial standards. I reported virtually every quarter on Metro's financial reports, usually in scathing terms.

"Literally hundreds of people can attest to my making the following statement on hundreds of occasions: "Metro is the worst-managed company in porn." By the way, there are now so many competitors for this title that my statement may no longer be true. I also believe, and I have also stated so publicly and privately, that Metro has improved its business performance somewhat over the last year to eighteen months. But the fact of the matter is that, according to its financial reports, Metro has earned a mere pittance in porn.

" Metro did make a risky move into mainstream magazines that so far has apparently earned a decent return, but that does not mask their relative failure, business-wise, in porn. I have also recently stated, both publicly and privately, that although I had a strong initial negative reaction to replacing Marco DiMercurio with Greg Alves as head of Metro's West Coast operations, that I have been pleasantly surprised by Alves's performance. (For that matter, I also was critical of Steve Karmelin's departure, way back when.) I think Alves probably deserves some of the credit for what I characterized above as a modest improvement in Metro's performance, as does Quasarman. But Metro still isn't making any significant profits making porn.

"On any number of occasions, I attributed part of Metro's underperformance to instability in management. If Grant Thornton's statements are true, Mr. Guarino's influence can be cited as one of the primary reasons for such instability. Some of my sources implied as much over the years I covered Metro.

"Inquiries were made on two previous occasions by SEC and NASDAQ officials. To my knowledge, that was as far as it went. That is why I never pursued it as a story; in any event, my brief in covering the quarterly and annual reports of public companies in the adult business was to interpret the numbers, which don't lie. If I had uncovered solid evidence of undue influence, I would have pursued the story, written it, and "I personally believe that Paul Fishbein would have printed it in a second, because I remember him telling me that he was proud to print the paragraph you quoted. I believe that if Metro loses its status as a public company, that it would be harmful to the business, and I believe that such a happenstance would be more important to Paul Fishbein than any personal or financial relationships he might have with any individual or company. I saw him risk such relationships constantly for similar reasons of integrity.

"I regard Metro's performance as a failure in management. I said so on any number of occasions, and I said it to stock analysts, who regularly contacted me for my professional opinion. I have no knowledge of corruption or illegal acts. If you do, Luke, you have a citizen's duty to notify the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Boston Globe or the Wall Street Journal or the Providence or Cranston newspapers would be happy to print such a story. If you want my opinion, you should call or email me and ask me. It's a little sloppy to imply that a five-year old statement represents the state of my current opinion (or, for that matter, AVN's current opinion, of which I have no knowledge, since I have no connection any longer with the magazine), especially when subsequent information is easily available.

"One last nitpick: while I am indeed known in print to much of the porn world under my nom de plume of Rich C. Leather, I wrote my business articles, and appeared on the AVN masthead as Business Editor, under the nom de plume of Jack Point. I developed these noms de plume when I began to write for AVN, because my office duties at the magazine required uncluttered business relationships with porn companies who were clients and advertisers as well as subjects about which to write, and I did not wish anything I wrote to interfere with the care and feeding of those relationships, which, after all, was what AVN paid me a salary to do. Once I left the direct employ of AVN and continued as a freelance writer,

"I kept the noms de plume as a matter of continuity, and also because they amused me; however, I immediately disclosed what I had previously kept secret; i.e. that I was Rich C. Leather and Jack Point. Just about everyone in this business knows me as Randy, not as Rich or Jack. Any correspondence I have made to you or to Gene Ross's website has been under my real name. The article you quoted was written under the name of Jack Point.

"Steve" writes: Gene:Just wanted to let you know that I read your column every day and appreicate the insight you provide. However, I have one suggestion for your column. If possible, it would be easier to read your column if you had a bold heading for each and every bit of news you post. I know you do it for some of the newsbits, but not all of them. It would be easier for the readers to follow and can glance at the heading before deciding whether to read it or not. Sometimes, there is so much information that I don't know when the story begins and where it ends. \n Keep up the good work!!

"WILLIAM PHILLIPS" writes: "Greetings, Gene, from hardcore-free Limeyland. Thought your readers might like to know of a BBC TV programme seen by maybe 5 million Brits on Wednesday (28 July) all about your industry.

"It was fronted by Ruby Wax, a US-born comedienne (bad cross between Joan Rivers and Bette Midler) who makes a parade of her unshockability. She claimed the biz was worth $8 billion a year- twice what I'd figure-then did the well-trodden rounds of porn's acceptable faces: Bill Margold as Poppa Bear counselling a starlet, Nina Hartley being den mother, etc. She even helped rehearse a scene which included Ron Jeremy. (The Hedgehog wasn't identified and wasn't allowed to speak.) But when it came to the shoot (at Wicked, I think) the Brits couldn't cope. It was only a vanilla one-on-one with condoms between Randy Spears and his g/f, after he'd proved what a regular woodsman he is by claiming that he wouldn't let her do other guys, only girls "because they don't have dicks". Yet halfway through the action, the crew and Ms Wax fled the set in embarrassment.

"Her show's called 'Ruby's American Pie' but we never saw the cream pie. She's done so many other skin-crawling things in the company of Imelda Marcos, the Duchess of York and suchlike that I reckon porn can be proud of grossing her out. Regards, Phillips.

Congress Recognizes The NCA and the AEIEF

Mike Ross reports: (Washington D. C.) - On Friday morning, a friend of mine, Phillip Hitchcock, and I did something I dreamed about doing for years - Registering as a national lobbyist and getting official Congressional recognition for the NCA as a national Political Action Committee (we also met with Congressman Kleczk regarding H 1525 - IC legislation).

"The registration process is required by the 1995 Lobbying Disclosure Act, and is quite simple, effective and takes place in both the House and Senate. Usually the process takes no longer than 5 minutes per house (the offices are over 20 minutes apart), and its' best appreciated when done in person.

"The registration events took place amid the East's sweltering heat wave. After entering the building, meeting up with Phillip, and finding the first office, we walked in and handed the Senate Clerk the papers. Apparently we "turned up the heat" inside his office as I watched him raise his eyebrow (like Mr. Spock) smile slyly, and shake his head. Additionally, the House Clerk asked under his breath ...... "Is this for real?"

"With a smile, handshake and a 'gentlemen's laugh,' we received stamped copies of the documents and walked out the door giving each other 'hi-fives' because we made 'history'. And we're sure we made both of the clerk's day(s).

"What does this mean to the Cabaret industry? Simple, in the eyes of the United State's Congress and US Senate, WE ARE LEGITIMATE!!! What does this "legitimacy" bring us? Although we could do it before, we now can "officially lobby members of Congress and the Senate, testify before committees and raise money to make campaign donations" just like other high profile companies and industries do."

"This makes us 'players' in upcoming campaigns. According to the Senate, there are only 3,500 Federally registered Political Action Committees. There has been lots of talk about registering over the last few years, but no one ever stepped forward and actually did it. At the same time, the Adult Entertainment Industry Education Fund also registered with Congress and was recognized by them as a legitimate lobbying group.

Political Spotlight: Rayne, NCA Industry Professional of the Month

Mike Ross: Exotic Entertainer Rayne has been named the NCA Industry Professional of the Month for her political and social work with the disabled on her "Curveball '99" program.

"Curveball '99, created by her, is in its second year as a softball benefit for the charity program 'Self Awareness for Disabled Americans.'

'I became involved in the program because my brother was born with Spina Bifida,' Rayne said. 'Curveball '99 raises money to help disabled patients.'

"Last year the event was entitled Curveball '98 and raised over $2,500 for the program that helps with patient needs and dreams. This year, Rayne's hopes the program will raise over $5,000.

'We have invited over a dozen dancers and film stars to participate in the program,' Rayne said. 'An exact roster of who will be playing will be provided before the event.'

"In order to help put on the event, she is seeking corporate and business sponsorships. The National Cabaret Association, through the California Cabaret Association, is an event cosponsor, and urges other adult businesses to help with sponsorships. If you would like information on how you can help support this program through a sponsorship, please call.

'We are hoping to put on a series of events around the country next year,' Rayne said. 'We hope to have dancers in every city join us for charity.'

"For her part as NCA Industry Professional of the Month, Rayne will receive $100, a certificate and an article published about her, as well our endorsement and sponsorship.

Gene sez: "If you have any questions about Curveball 99, you can contact Rayne at 714-703-4553 or [email protected]"

Mayoral Races - Is A Race In Your Future?

Mike Ross: "Elections ahead for many cities - Are we under attack?

"As we turn the final corner on the 21st century, we need to focus in on what appears to be the final political "battleground" for the century - local elections. With that in mind, there are two major commonalities between all of the elections that we need to pay attention to: Candidates are looking for 'issues & money' that helps gather votes at the expense of your business & industry.

"And nowhere is that more evident than in Sacramento, where after 2 terms, Mayor Joe Serna is about to retire due to a continuing battle with kidney cancer. As of today, there are at least 6 "undeclared candidates" and a rumor going around that several of those candidates are "pushing" the stalled adult entertainment ordinance in order to get community support, publicity, money and yes, those voters.

"As a result, we believe that we need to give you a glimpse into just a few of the Mayoral Races that are going on around the country. Of course, this is not a "complete list," and we hope that you will send us information about what's going on in your city/county so that we track it and get involved in their campaigns.

"It's important that you get involved in local campaigns because we need to put a face on the industry and make friends if we're going to defeat local proposals. Several of the races are on the "proposed hot spots list" published in last week's Adult Entertainment Advocate.

"Before the end of the year, 291 cities with populations over 30,000 will hold mayoral elections. Along with Columbus, Ohio, they include: Baltimore, Maryland; Bangor Maine; Birmingham, Ala; Bloomington, Minn. Charlotte, NC, Cincinnati Oh; Daytona Beach, Fla; Des Moines, Iowa; Fort Wayne, Ind; Gary, Ind; Grand Rapids Michigan; Great Falls, Montana; Hartford, Conn.; Houston, Texas; Manchester, NH; Montgomery Ala; Nashville, Ten (August 5, ); New Haven, Conn.; Rochester, NY; Salt Lake City, Utah; San Francisco, CA; Savannah, GA; Tacoma, Washington; Tucson, Ariz; Yonkers, NY.

"Several of the cities, including Baltimore, Hartford, Houston, Tuscon and Nashville have been fighting with adult businesses in a variety of ways that have cost both sides thousands of dollars."

H 1525 To Be Heard In 2000

Mike Ross reports: "While in Washington DC, Phillip and I also visited Congressman Kleczk's Office regarding H 1525, his proposed Independent Contractor Bill.

"The measure, introduced in the Spring, alters the definitions used by Federal and ultimately State Governments with respect to the relationships of Independent Contractors and Management in several industry's, including ours.

"The office was happy to meet us and invited us to participate in the ongoing discussions. Additionally, they are interested in reviewing our amendments and will add them to the "pile" so that they can be researched and reviewed.

"This is the first step in the creation of a national legislative program for the adult cabaret industry."

Tampa and Miami Leaders Will Meet Next Week To Create PAC

Mike Ross: "Cabaret owner's meetings last week in Miami and Tampa Florida achieved the desired result: Leaders from both communities will meet Wednesday in Tampa to create the "Florida Cabaret Association".

"The volunteers who will meet on Wednesday are: Jim Rose (Tootsies); Hal King (DeJa Vu); Paul Allen (Nightmoves Magazine); Dennis Israel (Pink Pony); Larry Wolf (7 Seas); Bob Waldorf (Snazzy's) Si Stern (Teasers); and Gary Olde (T's Lounge).

'It's time that we organize,' Hall King, Manager of DeJa Vu said. 'Being proactive is the only way to defeat legislative attempts to put us out of business.'

'We spent over $100,000 in legal fees,' Jim Rose said at the Miami meeting. "And it would have been cheaper and more effective to pay a lobbyist than go to court.' "

Though his videos don't speak a lick of foreign, should Britisher Steve "Ben Dover" Perry rate consideration in AVN's foreign awards categories? Howie Klein of HK Video, Ben's American parent company [VCA distributes] seems to think so.

Klein: "I think he should also be nominated, or at least looked at as a cameraman - he shoots some of the best sex of anybody. The guy shoots great sex while he's getting his dick sucked. And directing - here's a guy who does gonzo stuff that looks pretty real. If people think that's not directed, or anything, direction is what makes it look real. I think he's been overlooked."

Klein and Ben hooked up at least three years ago, maybe longer. "The line is unbelieveable; it really does well," says Klein. "It's on the charts all the time, always within the Top Four. We have about 35 tapes in catalog," said Klein. "But he's never won an award [save for a special achievement] for a scene, a movie or a line. I'm not complaining, but I feel bad for him."

Klein hooked up with Perry through Oliver Chech in Germany. "I was over there making a Caballero deal and he said you should see this guy's stuff," Klein said. 'He's [Perry] from England. It's been released in Germany but never in America.' So I hooked up with him, and he sent me some screeners. In England, the hardcore stuff is all illegal, but he's really famous for the cable-stuff. He's on TV there. He was shooting all the hard and sending it to Germany.

"I looked at the cable and flipped," Klein said. "I bought it right off the bat. That was it. We made our deal. I do all the advertising, marketing and the boxes, things like that. Odyssey had it first [distribution-wise]; now VCA has it and they do a really great job with it. I'm real happy with them.

"Steve and I have become real personal friends, Klein adds. "We're so opposite and everything, even in our music. He likes Barry Manilow and stuff like that. Even the name Steve Perry, that's how he got his name, from Steve Perry of Journey. That's his idol. And he's a real collector of things. He has James Bond memorabilia. He's a very interesting guy."

The next Ben Dover feature will be Sex Kittens From Britain. "There's this girl, Amanda, in there," says Klein, "a gorgeous little 18 year-old - to die for. The Booty Bandit which is getting an editors' choice, is really good, too."

British women willing to do the nasty don't seem to be in short supply.

Klein: "A lot of the woman are starting to come to him because he's getting so famous over there. That's how the Housewive Fantasies line started. These are the women who don't fit into the young, Cherry Popperâ„¢-type of girl. It ended up becoming unbelievable. We're getting more fan mail on that line than anything else. There's a big crowd that like to see older, plumper women. What we've done so far has been super successful."

According to Klein, Perry and his wife have been busted and done time for sending porn to Sweden. "But things are lightening up over there," he says.

A full report on the action and mayhem at the XPW wrestling inaugural card at the Reseda Country Club, July 31, will appear on Monday's update. The show begins at 8pm, the doors open at 7pm. The address is the corner of Reseda and Sherman Way.

While on the subject of Jail Babes, executive editor Mark Cromer offers an amusing piece in the September issue of Jail Babes, detailing how Luke Ford tried to crash the recent Jail Babes party at the Rainbow Bar & Grill.

Cromer writes: "As dusk settled over Sunset Boulevard that night, I stepped out to the patio to work my beer, when in between the parade of gleaming cleavage, fishnets and Armanis, I noticed a familiar figure skulking behind a telephone pole across the club's driveway, dressed in a suit and holding a mini-cam behind a newspaper as if on some half-assed undercover stakeout. Ah yes, our old friend Luke Ford, on-line porn gossip and perpetual pariah to the adult industry."

Cromer mentions that more than several people were disturbed that Ford "was within eyesight." Cromer reports that he had a chat with Ford quoting Ford as saying, 'Well, I guess I've been banned from all HUSTLER events." Cromer, in his article, says he did extend an invite, though, to his knowledge "Ford kept his distance from the soiree." Hustler runs two amusing pix catching Ford doing surveillance of the party.

Addict Caught Using Fake Penis

According to APB News, a San Antonio heroin addict on
