CHATSWORTH, Calif. - Wicked Pictures VP Joy King has written a guide to help newcomers break into the adult industry called "Get Into Porn."
King is a 24-year veteran of the business and the guiding light behind Jenna Jameson's rise to international stardom. She's promoting the self-published book tomorrow with an appearance on the Kevin & Bean Show tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. (PST) on L.A.'s KROQ 106.7 FM.
"I want to do a series of books, of which this is the first," King told AVN. "This book is pretty specifically for people who want to be performers, but I also get a ton of emails from makeup artists and from writers and editors and people like that, post-production people, so I'll break down the different segments of the industry for those people. So there will be additional books down the line; they'll probably be smaller; I'll probably do one on the Internet and get more specific."
King spent months pitching "Get Into Porn" to various publishers, sending out rough drafts and outlines. Finally, she decided to do it all herself.
"It all came together very quickly," King told AVN. "I got tired of saying 'I'm working on something.' When I got my last rejection letter at the end of last year from a publishing company, I just said, 'You know, I just need to go a different way, and I'm not going to talk about it; I'm just going to work on it every single day until it's done.' Then I can tell people, 'I wrote a book' instead of 'I'm gonna write a book.' When you finally decide to have some discipline, it's amazing what you can really accomplish when you sit down to do it. "
The result is a step-by-step marketing plan that anyone can start at home, working at his or her own pace. Sections include "Confessions of an Industry Insider: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask"; "Success Stories: Learn From the Best in XXX"; and "The Real Deal: Key Things You Can Do to Get Hired!"
"I had a lot of help," King said. "[Former Wicked girl] Sydnee Steele has been working with me on the project and she was kind of my assistant through the process, so for two straight weeks, she stayed with me, she cooked my meals, she took care of my dogs - I did nothing except write. I would go to Wicked and do my work, and then I would go home; she would have dinner ready for me; I would literally just sit down and start working. She's great; I love her. I couldn't have done it without her help. You know, it was just kind that whole thing where you just go, 'I just want to get this done,' and then that's how it all happened."
"Get Into Porn" is available now as an e-book, downloadable from the book's website getintoporn.com. A print version will be released in mid-March.
