LOS ANGELES—Like a lending library, a blue chest belonging to the Philadelphia Phillies that used to reside, according to former Philadelphia Eagles player Hollis Thomas, near the shower resting area in the locker rooms of Veterans Stadium, contained an “awesome” collection of porn that players from both teams would regularly share.
“Everybody knows about the blue chest,” dished Thomas this morning on 94 WIP, where he hosts a morning radio show. “It was an array, a pretty good array of magazines. You actually had a variety too. It was almost like a newsstand, put it that way. Actually, yeah, it was the precursor to the internet. You just picked up one, and there was a little sign that said when you’re done with the book, put it back. I did get a couple of books where the pages were stuck together.”
Okay, too much information, but it’s still heartening to learn that in the city of brotherly love, professional athletes used to share just about everything, even their porn.
According to CBSPhilly, however, “A former Phillies bat boy chimed in on Twitter, and noted the chest’s decoration.” We’re going to assume the bat boy could look, but not touch.
Veterans Stadium was demolished in 2004.
On a far more serious note, the Vet is now being put forth as the possible culprit behind several cases of brain cancer suffered by players who competed in the stadium over the years.
