Verizon plans to appeal today's ruling that it must reveal the name of a customer who downloaded 600 songs using Verizon's lines.rnrn

U.S. District Judge John Bates said Verizon must cooperate with recording industry efforts to track down online song swappers, rejecting the telecommunications giant's assertion that such a move would violate customer privacy and turn it into an online copyright cop, according to Reuters.rnrn

The 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act has caused ISPs to shut down web sites containing infringing material, but they have been hesitant or refused to punish users who share songs over peer to peer networks, like Kazaa or the late Napster.rnrn

Investigators for the recording industry have been able to track down IP addresses but have not been able to resolve users' names, thus requiring the help of providers like Verizon.
