Director Vena Virago’s upcoming feature for Vivid Alt, Eastside Story, had a special screening at an experimental/performance space called Monkeytown in New York, over the weekend, with another screening on Friday.
Virago told AVN.com that Sam Zimmerman, the show's curator, took parts of her movies like Silverlake Scenesters, Eastside Story and Pornstar Pets, and mixed them up with animations that had been made from Virago’s paintings. The results were projected simultaneously on multiple big screens. “It gave it all a sort of total immersion, triple-x art experience,” explained Virago.
“I had given Sam excerpts from a number of films and he reinterpreted my works by re-editing them and working with two other New York artists — Adam Kendall, Motomichi Nakamura —to create animation from my paintings.
“All of the videos played simultaneously, while people reclined on low couches, eating dinner and having drinks.
“The effect was both ethereal and psychedelic,” continued Virago. “Most striking to me were the scenes excerpted from Eastside Story, which had animation on top of sex, with bold images appearing to fly off the screen. It was an explosion of explicit sex with eye-popping color, lots of moaning, and hypnotic music.
“Sam did an amazing job with the show. I've never seen anything quite like it.”
Eastside Story will release through Vivid Alt, Vivid Entertainment Group’s alt. arm, in January. The movie looks to take viewers into the heart of East L.A., by having an eclectic group of adult performers tell their personal tales on camera and then have sex as part of a series of art installations, handcrafted by Virago.
