VSDA Hails Signing of Family Entertainment and Copyright Act

The Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) hailed the signing by the President today of the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act.

This new law: (1) makes camcording in theaters a federal crime; (2) enhances the penalty for illegally posting movies online before they are available on home video; and (3) clarifies that DVD filtering technology is not infringing.

“People who hijack movies by camcording them in theaters and then post them on the Internet or sell bootlegs on street corners are depriving each video store of more than $10,000 per year in rental revenue,” noted VSDA President Bo Andersen. “This new law gives federal judges something they did not have until now – the power to punish this criminal behavior appropriately.”
