VCA Will Stay on the Cutting Edge in '06

Following its sales success and mainstream media exposure with “alt-porn” breakout stars Joanna Angel and director Eon McKai, VCA Pictures will continue to focus on porn’s cutting edge, according to Peter Reynolds, VP of sales and marketing.

“I want to make VCA the IFC [Independent Film Channel] of porn, with new directors and creative visions. I want to raise the bar with adult entertainment,” Reynolds told AVN.com.

January 17 sees the release of McKai’s heavily hyped and long-awaited Neu Wave Hookers, handsomely packaged as a three-DVD set: movie, Behind the Scenes, and on the third disc the Dark Brothers’ original New Wave Hookers, which helped put VCA on the map 21 years ago.

Also new this month is Uncut XXX, featuring big-name rapper Kurupt, a combination of a music video shoot and sex scenes. It has crossover appeal to hip-hop fans, and Reynolds said, “I have every intention of getting it into music stores.” It’s the first of a series, produced in hardcore and cable versions.

Coming in February is Atomic Vixens, from another new director, Ron Royster, described as a cross between John Waters and Russ Meyer. “It’s a really funny alternative movie,” Reynolds said. It stars Lacie Heart and Justine Joli, and among its attractions is Ron Jeremy playing Jesus. Another is its soundtrack of bands from myspace.com and a bonus music CD.

Joanna’s Angels 2 is set for March. Reynolds said the first installment, heavily AVN Awards-nominated, did “fantastic” sales. It features, along with lots of alt-porn girls, an actor-stuntman named Tommy Pistol, who does a spectacular fall from a building.

Reynolds pointed out that before its sale to Larry Flynt, VCA was an industry leader for two decades but in recent years has been perceived as “kind of passé. It takes a lot of work to turn it around.”

The keys to the turnaround, he said, will continue to be “packaging plus entertainment value, visually captivating movies but with really hot sex.”

Reynolds’s 2006 plans also call for the revival of the all-male HIS Video line, which has been dormant for 12 years. He promises the new releases will be “damn entertaining gay product.”

At AEE, he said, he’s been getting the kind of “feedback from distributors that makes me want to get up in the morning — extremely positive.”
