University Course to Focus on Steven Toushin Memoir

A sociology professor at Chicago's DePaul University has created a unique sexuality course based on Bijou Video President Steven Toushin's recent memoir, The Destruction of the Moral Fabric of America. Kevin Brandyon's advanced course "The Institutionalization of Human Sexuality" will use a combination of lectures and texts — focusing on the Toushin autobiography — films and journal articles.

"Kevin was very influenced by the book, and has gone on to create a course using many of the book's major topics," Toushin told AVN.com. "Destruction will be the main text book of his course, and I'm very proud of that."

Toushin, who received AVN's Reuben Sturman Award in 1989, and a GAYVN Lifetime Achievement Award on Feb. 24, has diligently weathered 35 arrests, five federal trials, three federal appeals and numerous state and local trials. His 35-year tenure in the business is reflected in the 600-page book, which combines five shorter works in one volume.

In the book, Toushin presents a vast overview of moral destruction, stemming, in his mind, from the greed and dishonesty of government and religious officials.

"The course will present variant sexualities while deconstructing and demystifying many of the long-held traditional values, ideals and customs that many in society accept as the norm," Brandyon said.

"It was these very symbols of sexuality; sex outside of regulated boundaries of marriage and procreation that conservatives wanted controlled and eradicated."
