UTAH CRACKING DOWN ON PORN?

State lawmakers have voted to take Playboy out of prisons and to keep minors from seeing adult Web sites at public libraries, but it isn't yet known whether Gov. Michael Leavitt would sign the bills.

The state Senate has given unanimous final approval to a bill to withhold state funds from public libraries which don't shield adult Web sites from children under 18 - even though a large number of Utah libraries already use filtering programs.

The state House has given final approval to a bill taking out of prisons, jails, and juvenile detention centers any magazine, book, pamphlet, newsletter, stationery, greeting card, or video which "features nudity" - a measure which, in theory, could also mean some serious literary works as well as standard adult fare, say critics.

The bills go to Leavitt, but the governor - a longtime supporter of Internet taxes - hasn't yet declared where he stands on these bills.
