U.K. City Refuses Sex Shop Plans

City councilors have thrown out an application for a prospective sex shop, as concerned citizens blocked plans to open one in the city center.

Members of the public and the nearby Probation Service and Refugee Centre opposed the prospective shop and the licensing committee at Coventry City Council agreed and refused to give permission on the site, formerly Coventry Curtain Fabric Clearance.

The applicants for the shop, Adultworld directors Gary Best and Stuart Inglis, told icCoventry that the shop was for ordinary people and would not attract predators to the area.

They also pointed out the shop would have blanked out windows and no sexual content on display, unlike city centre shops like Ann Summers.

A spokesman from the city council told the report, "The grant of a license would be inappropriate having regard to the use to which any premises in the vicinity are put.

"The committee reached this decision having heard from the applicant and from the representatives of the occupiers of two premises within the immediate vicinity of 25 Bishop Street - The Probation Service and Coventry Refugee Centre."
