Trippin? Out 01/24/2003

-Having spent the better part of my 30 years growing up in Tampa, Florida, I find great pleasure in the fact that the Buccaneers are playing in the Super Bowl XXXVII on Sunday. If you take away the franchise's success of the past four or five years, it's been a pretty woeful legacy since the team entered the league in 1977. They wore orange and white uniforms for goodness' sake. So, in honor of the city I grew up in, I'm picking the Bucs in an upset of the heavily favored Oakland Raiders 24-21. rnrn

Though it's been clearly analyzed in newspaper columns and bars everywhere, I'd like to take a personal moment and comment on the infamous Miller Light commercial presently sweeping the nation. You know the one: the catfight between two gorgeous babes about whether the beer is 'less filling? or ?tastes great.? Of course, the hubbub turns into a rumble and the gals rip each other's clothes off, concluding with one of the finest commercial tag lines ever written: ?Wanna make out?? It's 30 seconds of pure brilliance. Those advertising folks over at Ogilvy/N.Y. are geniuses. I have spent more time breaking down this commercial over the past few weeks than I ever did studying for an Economics final. Much to my dismay, American Idol returns this week to begin the discovery of another musical superstar. Listening to anyone sing an Aretha Franklin song who isn't actually Aretha Franklin just isn't my cup o? tea. Kelly Clarkson was last year's big winner, and yes, her fifteen minutes have expired. Catch her on the next installment of Celebrity Mole. On the plus side, the humorless Brian Dunkleman is out as co-host, leaving the spotlight all to Ryan Sechrest, as annoying a personality there is working today. (If you live in Southern California and have ever listened to him on the radio you would fully understand what I mean.) From the few times I have watched the show, I still cannot get over Paula Abdul. Here is someone who hasn't been relevant in the music industry since I was a junior in High School. And she's judging talent? Sure, ?Straight Up? was cool in its day, but am I to believe that every celebrity in the world was busy on the day they hired Abdul?
