Triangle Films Thinks Inside the Box

CHATSWORTH, Calif. - Nascent lesbian production firm Triangle Films has a simple but definitive motto: "Created by a woman for women."

"As a woman and a lesbian, my ultimate goal is to shoot women who enjoy other women," said company founder Kathryn Annelle. "I don't really refer to it as 'porn;' it's real life. It's what women do when they are with a woman they desire … or with women they desire."

Formerly a director/camera op for Girlfriends Films, Annelle struck out on her own less than a year ago, finding distribution with Avalon Enterprises, which has thus far shipped 15 Triangle titles.

"We had lunch with Avalon and determined very quickly that [owner Gigi Appleton] is a no-bullshit person who would give the time and attention to our product line that we feel it deserves," Annelle recounted. "Avalon was also looking for a high-end product to distribute and as they don't regularly distribute the girl/girl genre, this seemed like a perfect fit."

Annelle, who grew up in Alabama and served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1986 to 1991, aspires to the lesbian erotica of Viv Thomas and Andrew Blake, as opposed to the more "butch" fare favored by some lesbian pornographers.

"I think we all enjoy beautiful women," Annelle contended. "They're pleasing to the eye, let's be real here. I like a certain type of butch girl: pretty ones. I've always considered Kelly Kline and Penny Flame a little 'butch.' And Sasha Grey. What can I say about Sasha that hasn't already been said?"

Annelle cast AVN Best New Starlet nominee Grey opposite Ariel X in her hardest-edged title to date, Boundaries. "When I shot Sasha and Ariel, there was such power in the room, so much passion … the girls were so into it, so into each other," she said.

And how does one know for certain that a girl is "into it" with so many gay-for-payers in the talent pool? Responded Annelle, "Triangle Girls are all women that I am absolutely, 100 percent certain I am shooting the woman, not the model. That's all. Most of my women go far beyond the call of duty."

In addition to Kline, Flame, Grey and Ariel X, she listed Kimberly Kane, Nautica Thorn, Sandra Romain and Roxy DeVille as some of the girls she knows are "into it."

"I can put these women in any scene, any scenario, and they live the part and the sex is so real," Annelle said. "They are all 'magical' in front of my camera."

Triangle Films will soon be offering up some more magic in Boundaries 2, which arrives in stores June 18. For more information, visit trianglefilms.com.
