HOLLYWOOD—Winter seemingly came early to Los Angeles, arriving just in time to greet the inaugural presentation of The Sex Awards with the first rain of the season, accompanied by a bitter edge in the wind.
By 6 p.m. at the Avalon nightclub in Hollywood, the adult A-list began to arrive, with girls in heels and micro minis shivering as they checked in. Pulling her short coat around the skimpy dress that draped her inked torso, Bonnie Rotten bemoaned having just left Jamaica to return home for the show … then immediately flashed her 100-watt smile and said how excited she was to be there. Turns out it was well worth her while to attend.
As the performers strutted down the red carpet, which was set up in Bardot—the upstairs bar at the Avalon—the more camera-shy industry heavyweights streamed into the front door of the club. By 8:30 p.m. the lobby was packed with familiar faces. As show time neared the Avalon staff politely but efficiently moved the crowd into the venerable concert hall, where cartoon footage played as people took their seats. (This is the same stage that once hosted such bands as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles back in its days as the Palace, we were reminded by three-time AVN Award winner James Bartholet.)
Wicked Pictures contract star Jessica Drake reiterated the significance of this show: the first fan-voted awards show to air on national television. She noted that more than 100,000 fans cast their vote in the Sex Awards’ 18 different categories.
Drake also thanked the sponsors: HotMovies.com (Presenting Sponsor), Baci Lingerie (Winners Circle and Trophy Girl Sponsor), OVO (Pleasure Product Sponsor), CougarLife.com (Red Carpet Sponsor) and Vivid Cabaret (which added to the glitz of the evening by contributing a diamond bracelet to be presented to the Porn Star of the Year). “They helped make this event possible,” she noted.
The first set of presenters—Prince Yahshua, Skin Diamond, Lola Foxx and Danica Dillon—came up to announce the first two winners. Foxx explained that in each category the top five to six vote-getters would be announced—and their names and photographs flashed on the screen—before the winner was revealed.
The first winner up on stage was Alexis Texas, whose site in the PremiumCash network was named Favorite Porn Star Website. Picking up one of the glass obelisks for Favorite Adult Website was Brazzers.com.
Before Webcam Girl of the Year was announced by Dani Daniels and Anikka Albrite, a clip ran that featured some of the nominees—including Aaliyah Love, Jacky Joy and Angela Sommers—talking about how to treat a cam girl. Then the winner was announced: Little Red Bunny, who was wearing a gorgeous and revealing lace gown that was definitely NSFO (not safe for Oscars).
Up to present the award for Hottest Adult Stud and Hottest Sex Scene were Remy LaCroix, Kelly Madison and Allison Moore. Not surprisingly, James Deen was called up on stage to pick up the Hottest Adult Stud trophy. The notoriously shy Deen managed to make it on stage for a few seconds before he mumbled, “I just want to say that [Sex Awards producer] Paul Fishbein is an asshole, because he knows I hate coming up here.”
Winning top honors for Hottest Sex Scene was director Manuel Ferrara’s Evil Anal 16 segment in which he appeared with the always-sizzling Chanel Preston and Phoenix Marie.
At this point Drake took a moment to introduce trophy girls Ana Foxxx and Mia Malkova, who were decked out in fashions from Baci Lingerie. Immediately following was some comedy orchestrated by Sam Tripoli, whose Naughty Show is an adult industry fave.
Up next it was time for the pleasure product side of the industry to get its time in the spotlight, with awards presented by Bailey Blue, Brooklyn Chase, Riley Reid and Nikita von James. Taking top honors for Favorite Sex Toy for Women was the Magic Wand from Vibratex—which is only fitting given how many times the Wand had appeared on screen in adult movies. Coming up to accept the award on behalf of Dan and Shay Martin was Kim Airs, owner of GrandOpening.com and an all-around pleasure product maven, who explained that the Martins were busy with the fall harvest for their vineyard. “From vines to vibes,” she joked.
Favorite Sex Toy for Men honors went to the Kayden Kross Fleshlight. Kross, originally slated to host the awards show, is expecting her first child so she was not in attendance, but filling in nicely for her was Stoya, one of Kross' Digital Playground contract sisters and a Fleshlight Girl herself.
Phil Varone, the former Skid Row drummer better known in adult for his Vivid movies and CalExotics toy line, was flanked by cuties Dillion Harper and Kimber Day to announce Porn’s Best Body. Perennial fan favorite Riley Steele, who just signed a two-year contract with Axel Braun, came up to inaudibly accept the award. (Don’t worry … they’ll fix it in post.)
Immediately following was Sexiest Adult Star, an honor earned by Ashley Fires. The charismatic Fires, always a standout at AEE in the Clips4Sale booth, was on message, working in various sound bites—“Piracy is not a victimless crime” and “Keep it safe, keep it sexy”—while also thanking all the people who help her “share my sexuality” with fans.
At the midpoint of the show it was time for the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to a man who’s more than familiar with mainstream attention: Ron Jeremy. There to introduce him was another veteran, Ed Powers of Dirty Debutantes fame, accompanied by Penthouse Pet sister act Natasha and Natalia Starr. They introduced an amusing segment in which passersby at Hollywood and Highland were asked how they felt about Ron Jeremy getting a lifetime achievement award.
Jeremy joked that the award was “the polite way of saying, ‘Get the fuck out.’” Then he turned serious for a moment to name three guys he deeply respected who are now no longer with us: Jamie Gillis, John Leslie and Fred Lincoln.
Another interstitial video followed: a cute bit with Chanel Preston and Tommy Pistol bickering as they shoot a scene with director Eli Cross. The end tagline read, “Porn’s Best Couple (Yes, they’re really nominated).” There to announce the winner in the category were Ash Hollywood, Vicki Chase and Erica Porsch, this year’s Miss CougarLife.com. The top-voted pair? Riley Steele and Eric Everhard.
Girlish Maddy O’Reilly came up next to reveal the results of the fan voting in the following three categories, along with award show regulars Misty Stone and Evan Stone (getting ready for Halloween with a giant fright wig). The first of the three, Hottest New Girl, went to Bonnie Rotten, who was presumably glad she made the trek back from Jamaica.
In quick succession, two winners were announced who were not present to pick up their awards: Max Candy was named Favorite Director, and the Greatest All-Time Celebrity Sex Video (a one-time award) went to 1 Night in Paris. (Alas, no Hilton in the house.)
Live entertainment followed, with Maya Sinstress and Team Clown Tits performing Firewater’s “Hey Clown.” It was a real treat for fans of burlesque, performed with both skill and enthusiasm.
Also performing with skill were Casey Calvert and Dana DeArmond in another vignette, getting bitchy with each other on set with director Cross before the tagline came up: “Porn’s Perfect Girl/Girl Screen Couple (Yes, they’re also nominated).” Coming up on stage with presenters Brandy Aniston, Bonnie Rotten and Stoya were two couples—the night’s only tie. Jessica Drake and Asa Akira made it on stage first, with Akira taking the mic to say that when she sees a girl who looks like Jessica Drake, she doesn’t think she’s going to fuck well. Drake, she noted, is a definite exception.
The other winners, Remy LaCroix and Riley Reid, seemed a bit tongue-tied, so they locked lips instead.
The second-to-last set of presenters were Joanna Angel, Kendall Karson and Marie McCray, who revealed the top-voted Adult Movie of the Year contenders, including the winner, Asa Akira Is Insatiable 3. Since reclusive director Mason was not on hand to accept, Akira came up to hold the trophy aloft and pay tribute to the last in this series from Elegant Angel (Mason is now directing for OpenLife Entertainment).
Preston returned to the stage again, this time to help Adrianna Luna and Lexington Steele award Adult Parody of the Year honors, which went to Vivid’s The Dark Knight XXX: A Porn Parody. Director Axel Braun came up on stage with one of the movie’s stars, Aiden Ashley, to accept, jokingly noting that he was grateful Max Candy doesn’t direct parodies.
Drake came back on stage to remind everyone to come to the after-party upstairs at Bardot, and to announce that the winner of the final category, Porn Star of the Year, would be receiving a diamond bracelet, courtesy of the new Vivid Cabaret in Los Angeles. The evening’s final set of presenters, Casey Calvert, Prinzzess and Steven St. Croix, joked around before bringing on Torin Wagner of Vivid Cabaret to present the necklace.
There on stage, once again, was Akira, who said she was grateful to get another chance to come up because she forgot to thank Mark Spiegler, “my agent and best friend.” Then Akira dropped what was definitely the biggest news of the evening: From now on, this award-winning performer would be performing exclusively as a Wicked Pictures contract star. This move represented the star’s biggest dream come true. Then, in true Asa Akira fashion, she cheerfully recollected “all the dicks I had to suck to get here.”
After that, it was all over but the drinking—which continued until closing time upstairs at Bardot. But first, the winners were invited back to the OVO Lounge, sponsored by the German pleasure product manufacturer OVO. We ran into Kim Airs at the after-party, who was thrilled to have scored a vibrating cock ring.
Was it a success? As co-sponsors of the event, we’d like to think so. And we also liked a comment from one industry insider, who pronounced it a success and opined that next year there wouldn’t be an empty seat in the house.
