Standard Digital, Hit By Bootleggers, Alerts Other Companies

Jon Islas at Standard Digital was more than surprised a few weeks back when he started getting defective returns on his top-selling DVD Taboo.

“I don’t get defectives,” he told AVN.com. “L&M West [the replicator] does a fantastic job. I rarely get defectives on Taboo. And I get 20 defectives in a week? What’s that about?”

The second he opened the box, he said, he knew. The packaging was indistinguishable from the real thing, even down to Standard’s UBC code. But inside, the heavily moire-patterned picture-disc marked it as a copy. The disc’s contents had been duped right off Standard’s DVD, including all the extras.

Islas’ concern, beyond Standard’s own losses, is that the bootleggers have hit other companies as well.

“Obviously it affects everybody,” he said. “He won’t just be doing Taboo, he’ll be doing somebody else. Nobody’s making enough money just duping Taboo. They’re duping anything that sells well, anything you have in the AVN Chart Toppers.”

Islas says he hopes anyone else who has recently been victimized by bootleggers will step forward and get in touch with him. “Maybe somebody else is getting bootlegged and they got a copy and we can match them up and find out if they’re coming from the same place.”

“Somebody put a lot of work into these,” he said. “You don’t do that and make a hundred of them. I would love to hear from anybody that’s getting high quality bootlegs.”
