South Carolina Businesses Raided

The Spartanburg Herald reported that Priscilla's, a local South Carolina novelty store, was shut down for several hours Friday, while Spartanburg County sheriff's investigators hauled out boxes of sex toys and instructional videos.

The sex toys were on display on three shelves, said Sheriff Chuck Wright, who said he was not trying to hamper business.

"They still have a store full of clothes to sell," Wright told the newspaper. "But I have to enforce the law. It is illegal to disseminate obscene materials."

The report claimed that the raid came after area residents called a complaint into the Sheriff's Office about a week ago. The sheriff said one of his captains, using Wright's pickup truck, went to Priscilla's and made a purchase.

Priscilla's was one of two area businesses to be raided by deputies.

The Movie Gallery, just down the road and within view of Priscilla's, also had materials taken by deputies.

Two people were charged with disseminating obscene material from each location. The arrests were connected to the rental or sale of videos and DVDs.

The report said that Shawn Wesley Price, 25, and Tamika Lashonda Grier, 23 were both arrested at the Movie Gallery.

Grier was also charged with disseminating obscene material to a person younger than the age of 18. A 17-year-old was sent to the store and rented an adult-oriented movie.

Boxes containing several thousand videos were seized from the Movie Gallery.

According to the story, charged at Priscilla's were Permethia Burnett Bradburn, 32, and Eliza Albertha Gathers, 22.

Wright told reporters that he was concerned about the displays at Priscilla's, but no charges had been filed because of toys or novelty items that were seized, only videos or DVDs. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
