Showtime’s 'L Word' Spells Online Success

Showtime’s lesbian-themed 'The L Word,' is quickly becoming an online hit, with fans flooding the cable network’s Web site to download its podcasts.

The show, which began airing its third season in January, has been a digital bonanza for Showtime which as seen a huge spike in Web traffic for the show, the Hollywood Reporter noted Monday.

Clips from the show are among the top 10 video clips streamed on the site, with downloads of the its podcasts also showing marked increases since it began airing new episodes, the network said.

According to Yahoo!, traffic on Showtime’s Web site increased by 26 percent last week due to interest generated by the show.

Robert Greenblatt, Showtime’s entertainment boss, said the show quickly becoming one of its signature programs, noting that it’s assured of being picked up for its fourth season.

Series creator Ilene Chalken said the show has managed to increase its fan base through good storytelling rather than titillation or sexual situations. She said men who began watching it for its characters’ sexual orientation were later hooked on its dramatic appeal.
