Sex Can Get Better With Age

According to a new nationwide survey, more than 70 percent of people aged 50 and over who responded said they consider themselves to be sexually active and are satisfied with their sex lives. More than 60 percent of those over 50 reported being as or more satisfied with their sex lives as when they were younger. More than 70 percent of respondents who are sexually active say they engage in sexual relations at least once a week.

This survey, designed to gauge the level of sexual vitality of people in their mid-lives and beyond, is the first step of a comprehensive, three-year initiative, Mature Sexuality, being launched by the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals (ARHP). The initiative intends to encourage open, honest, and accurate communication between people over 50 and their health care providers.

"This survey should come as good news to many who never envisioned people 60, 70, or older as enjoying sex-as well as to those who mistakenly believe that sexual vitality diminishes with age," says Dr. Louise Tyrer medical director for ARHP. "While it is true there are certain physical and psychological barriers to having active sex lives as we age, many of these can be overcome. Mature Sexuality will help doctors, nurse practitioners and other professionals better communicate with their patients about health issues affecting sexuality."

"Even though attitudes about sex have radically changed since the 1960's, there is still a need for more and better communication about sex and health for everyone approaching 50-and beyond 50," said Wayne Shield, ARHP's president and CEO. "We look forward to joining other leading organizations to bring new information to health care professionals and the public about clinical, behavioral and sociological factors essential for living healthier and more vital lives."
