HOLLYWOOD—Darren Star, creator of the hit HBO series Sex and the City, has landed yet another project with the cable giant: a series adaptation of Barbara Rose Brooker's novel, The Viagra Diaries. But perhaps the biggest news is that one of Hollywood's sexiest older women, acclaimed actress/comedienne Goldie Hawn, 65, has signed to star.
According to a report by Nellie Andreeva on Deadline.com, the show "centers on a woman (Hawn) who, after her husband has a 'mid-life crisis' at 65 and leaves her, struggles with being single for the first time in 35 years."
Speaking of years, the show will be Hawn's first acting gig since her excellent performance as the aging hippie Suzette in The Banger Sisters in 2002, and according to Andreeva, Hawn devoted "lengthy consideration" to the role before accepting it.
The series will be produced by Alan and Wendy Riche, who first tried to sell the book as a feature; the couple's son Peter; and Aaron Kaplan, who optioned the novel and took it to HBO along with Hawn and Star, who'll be one of the executive producers together with Hawn's managers, Brian Medavoy and Alan Nevins.
Older readers will remember Hawn from her first role as the girlfriend of disk jockey Larry Clarke in the 1967 TV series Good Morning, World, and as the bikini-clad dancing comedienne on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In a year later. Inbetween, she essayed the Oscar-winning role of the love interest to dentist Walter Matthau in Cactus Flower. In all, Hawn has appeared in more than 25 features, including the well-regarded Shampoo (1975), Private Benjamin (1980) and Overboard (1987).
No debut date for the series has yet been announced.
