Sept. 30 is Cut-Off Date for AVN Awards Consideration

AVN is reminding all adult producers that to be considered for AVN Awards nominations this year, their productions must be released by Sept. 30. By that date, a title must be in the hands of a minimum of 10 wholesale distributors or 100 retail outlets.

To be considered for a 2006 Awards Show nomination, a production must have been released between Oct. 1, 2004 and Sept. 30, 2005. The 23rd Annual AVN Awards show will be held Jan. 7, 2006 at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.

Tickets go on sale through AVNawards.com on Aug. 1 (when the site will be updated with information about the 2006 Awards Show). Tickets may also be purchased by mailing the order form found in the striking Awards Show ad campaign debuting in the August issue of AVN.

“The Sept. 30 cut-off date is just about two months away,” said AVN Publisher Tim Connelly, “so producers should plan on releasing the videos, films or DVDs they want considered for Awards nominations on or before that date.”

AVN Editor in Chief Mike Ramone, meanwhile, reminded producers that Sept. 30 is also the deadline for them to provide AVN with their lists of pre-nominations — productions, scenes, performers, box covers and marketing campaigns they want considered for Awards nominations — and accompanying screeners.

“Such lists are invaluable tools AVN uses to insure that the nominations process is as fair and all-encompassing as possible,” Ramone said.

Like last year, producers are required to enter their pre-noms themselves on AVN’s pre-noms Website, avnawards.com/nominations. Each producer will receive its own password and user name to access the site, which is scheduled to go live Sept. 1 and remain live through Oct. 9. When it does go live, it will be announced in a separate story here on AVN.com. AVN will no longer accept producer pre-nom lists in hard copy or via e-mail or fax. To receive passwords starting Sept. 1, producers must contact AVN Senior Associate Editor Heidi Pike-Johnson at [email protected] or 818.718.5788, x154. Passwords will not be given out prior to Sept. 1.

“Last year, when we debuted our pre-nom Website, we found that it enabled producers to more efficiently enter their own pre-noms,” Ramone said. “So we’re going with it again this year.”

Pike-Johnson meanwhile, urged producers to be judicious in their pre-noms, noting that some companies pre-nom most or, in a select few instances, every single one of their releases in the hope that that will increase their chances of getting a nomination or nominations.

Wrong.

“Only pre-nom those titles or scenes you really believe in and really believe have a good chance at being nominated,” Pike-Johnson said. “If you say everything you’ve released this year is worthy of a nomination, that is simply not going to work in your favor. It’s really, really important to be considerate that way.

“I can’t stress that enough. Only pre-nom things that you really believe in because that will make increase the chances that we’ll believe in them, too.”

Pike-Johnson also noted that production companies must supply AVN with all required information in their pre-noms, such as listing all performers in sex scenes and the names of all behind-the-camera talent in the technical categories such as editing, videography, music and others.

By Sept. 30, producers must provide AVN with two copies of each title or scene they would like to be considered for nominations, as well as sample materials used in marketing campaigns if seeking consideration in those categories. AVN greatly prefers that such titles be submitted in the DVD format. A list of the AVN Awards categories can be found at the end of this article.

The titles should be mailed or hand-delivered to:

Connelly said that, like last year, producers could request that their comedies and foreign features be nominated in the Best Film and Best Video Feature categories. DVD producers, meanwhile, can pre-nom classic and all-sex DVDs for Best DVD. However, if those productions are not eventually nominated in the Best Film, Best Video Feature or Best DVD categories, producers cannot then request that they be nominated as Best Sex Comedy, Best Foreign Feature, Best Classic Release on DVD or Best All-Sex DVD.

Nominations for the 2006 Awards Show will be announced in November.
