HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—Standup comedian Dave Attell's Dave's Old Porn begins its second season on Showtime tonight at 11 p.m. ET. The comedy, “Mystery Science Theater 3000 with very hairy bush," as Attell likes to describe it, is truly unique in the annals (and anals) of television history. Featuring Attell along with a different comedian each week and another guest who is usually a porn star, the three sit on a red couch, watch old porn and crack jokes. As Men's Health put it in an article on Attell published yesterday, the result is a "punchlines-and-poontang piñata."
The magazine sat down with Attell for a quick interview on the occasion of his first anniversary, and talked about what he's learned about porn as the host of a show about porn. This, remember, is a man who has twice hosted the AVN Awards (in 2010 and 2012), but it turns out his year spent watching the older stuff has been a surprisingly educational one for him, especially when it comes to the difference between old and new porn.
In fact, when asked to talk about why the old stuff is more endearing than the newer stuff, he pretty much expresses the feelings of a lot of people. "There were definitely characters and stories and a plot and an ending in those old movies," he told Men's Health. "You do get kind of emotionally invested, and maybe that’s part of why we love them. You really fall in love with the girls, and the guys were like chameleons. Ron Jeremy was a flight attendant, a plumber, a secret agent ... the range of that guy! Robert DeNiro cannot do what Ron Jeremy does."
Okay, so he exaggerates, but only a little.
