Right-Wing Telco Smears Competitors and Gay Rights

Smear campaigns have often been effective in politics, but not many businesses have utilized the same technique to boost business. Until now. United American Technologies, an obscure telco located in Oklahoma, has found a new way to lure prospective customers—by smearing its competitors as liberal companies that promote the “homosexual agenda.”

The company, which bills itself as “the only carrier that is taking an active stand against same-sex marriages and hardcore child pornography,” has been employing an aggressive technique when talking to customers who call with questions.

According to Web news site Wonkette (www.wonkette.com), one of its readers, Eugine Mirman, called the telco and spoke to someone in the sales and marketing department. Mirman asked the telco if AT&T sponsors child pornography. United American Technologies replied that AT&T does not, but that MCI does. The salesperson went on to claim that MCI sponsors a Montreal-based “pedophile website for men who love boys,” and alleged that Verizon “trains their employees to accept the homosexual lifestyle.”

The humorous phone conversations, which can be heard on the Wonkette site, demonstrate that the Christian-based telco means business. Mirman, who is clearly having a grand time leading the salesperson on, says, “So basically, God hates AT&T, MCI, and Verizon,” to which the rep replies, “Yes.”

United American Technologies is said to be gaining new customers at a rate of about 2,000 per month. A cut of proceeds is given to conservative political campaigns via 527 organization Faith, Family and Freedom, a creation of the Republican floor leader of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
