Retail Clerk Charged With 29 Obscenity Charges

A clerk at a convenience store was arrested yesterday on 29 obscenity charges, the result of a six-week undercover operation.

Mohammed Islam, 37, sold undercover officers 14 videos that authorities claim are obscene. Islam was working at Mak's Discount Beverages.

Islam was charged with once count of wholesale promotion of obscene materials, 14 counts of possession of obscene materials with intent to sell, and 14 counts for selling obscene materials. Islam booked into the Polk County Jail on $15,000 bond.

The adult videos, which have not been identified at this time, were being kept in a back room of the store.

Last year Polk County forced out Lakeland Florida's Video X-tra and Varsity Video Store, the last two adult video stores in the county, under threat of prosecution under the RICO statute. The store owners agreed to shut down their stores if the state dropped the charges.
