Residents Try to Stop U.K. Adult Shop’s License Renewal

Some local residents and businesses have created a petition to urge authorities not to renew the license for an adult store here. The novelty shop opened in May of 2004 and has had its license awarded every year without objection.

However, a regulatory committee will consider a petition signed by people opposed to the shop when it meets on Monday.

The Halifax Times reported that license applications can only be turned down if a committee believes that the applicant is unsuitable, if there are too many such businesses in the town, or it would spoil the character of the area or the premises are unsuitable.

A similar shop operates up the street but there have been few, if any, formal complaints about either business, licensing committee member Grenville Horsfall, told the Halifax Times.
