Rent or Buy: Wantedlist.com Offers DVD Options

With 7300 DVDs in their system, Wantedlist.com claims to be the largest, most comprehensive business in the DVD rental model.

"We liked to think that (we're the biggest). We have the largest library known to mankind. It's not only wide, but elite also. We carry the best and biggest selection of movies. We think we've got the best pricing available also," co-founder Ahn Tran told AVN.com.

Besides selection, Wantedlist.com has some other features they hope will help them standout from their competitors.

"We've been around for a year and a half now, so our customers have a lot of reviews to sift through - tens of thousands of reviews," said Tran.

Original content is one of the tactics Wantedlist.com hope will help them standout. Besides reviews, the Website is utilizing an editorial style that Tran describes as "hardcore meets Maxim," featuring porn star's such as reigning AVN Best New Starlet Jenna Haze in exclusive interviews.

"It helps keep people on the site longer and helps them make informed decisions for selecting rentals," explains Tran.

Wantedlist.com offers four options for rentals. Users can rent two, three, four, or eight DVDs at once, depending on the plan they select. The average customer takes the option that offers three titles at once.

Once a customer has signed up to the service, they can create their "wanted list", choosing which titles they would like shipped to them. Users can cue up as many titles as they wish. The median size of a cue is 22 titles, the average 48. "Even if your top five selections aren't available, the second five will be," said Tran. "We keep a pretty close eye on what's going out and we won't hesitate to order more copies of a title if we need them."

Not that Wantedlist.com leaves it all up to the consumer - they also have a recommendation engine that suggests titles based on past rental history.

If a customer selects a title before 2PM PST, the title will be shipped that day. "If you live in Los Angeles, you'll have it the very next day," noted Tran.

Wantedlist.com mails their DVDs to customers via U.S. mail in nondescript First Class envelopes. Rather than shipping the DVD in a jewel case, they ship it in a high-quality soft paper sleeve that cuts down on shipping prices.

Included in the package are separate postage paid return envelopes for each title you selected. "That way they can mail it back when they are finished - and have a new one sent out."

Unless the customer likes the DVD so much they want to purchase it.

"We like to describe ourselves as a preview service. Consumers get lured in by pretty boxes! People get fooled into buying movies by the descriptions of the on the boxes. In this situation you can watch the movie and decide if you really want it - and you get to buy it at a discounted price," said Tran.

Customers can go to Wantedlist.com and sign to their account, and with the click of a button buy the DVD that they have at a used price - or order a brand new copy of the DVD if they wish.

"Our customers love it. The average customer buys about a movie a month," attested Tran.

Wantedlist.com also offers an affiliate program, with Webmasters averaging conversion rates of 1/200, although Tran points out that some Webmasters do as well as 1/30.
