Progress Fighting Cybercrime: Swiss Police Unit

Progress continues in fighting Swiss Internet crime and child-porn fighting remains top priority, although spam remains the top complaint from the public, according to the Swiss police unit charged with handling crime in cyberspace

The Swiss Coordination Unit for Cybercrime Control (Cyco) – staffed by police, attorneys, Net security specialists, and criminologists – said in its May 12 report that the campaign against child porn it launched last year would continue to be top priority, especially after an extra monitoring post became possible once Zurich joins the Cyco unit come summer.

The Cyco report also said it dealt with 6,097 complaints in 2004, down from 6,457 in 2003, its first year, with the majority of complaints dealing with spam followed by unsolicited hardcore porn. But the unit also said phishing has become a rising concern among Swiss Netizens.

Cyco said in its report that cybercrime complaints transferred to regional police agencies showed "a fourfold increase," with 171 more cases turned over to Interpol, most of which covered child porn and sexual violence.

Cyco also said they have growing concern about online chat room grooming of children by adults for sexual misconduct, and were "regularly confronted with serious abuses committed in discussion forums."
