Porn Less Popular in Bulgaria

Oh how Bulgarians rushed to buy adult videos nearly a decade ago. After the communists were kicked out of the government, Bulgarians rushed to enjoy that which was forbidden under 45 years of dictatorial suppression. And that included good old hard-core pornography. \n After a half dozen boom years, however, Bulgarian appetite for porn appears to be declining, according to an executive in the country's erotic film industry. The taste for explicit sex on video seems to have peaked about 1994 and 1995. \n Dimitar Enchev, of GUFA-Bulgaria, recently told reporters that demand was much lower than in previous years, though he gave no specific figures. GUFA-Bulgaria, organized in 1996, is the Bulgarian branch of GUFA, the erotic film maker's association that is based in Germany. \n Under communist rule, adult videos were strictly prohibited and even public discussion about sexual matters was not allowed. Those who distributed porn could be locked up and even women who wore miniskirts were subject to arrest. \n After the communists were overthrown in 1989, the rules regarding pornography remained on the books but not generally enforced. That murky legal situation was clarified with the passage of new laws that have, since 1996, allowed the free flow of adult porn into the Balkan state. \n Enchev said GUFA has distributed more than 120 explicit videos in Bulgaria since 1996. That's a significant number by Bulgarian standards but it represents only about two weeks' output for the U.S. porn industry.
