LOS ANGELES—Richard Avery's dramatic images, produced for his Juliland site, are instantly recognizable for the way in which they bring high-art and high-fashion sensibiities to his portraits of adult stars. But now the veteran shooter is putting aside the camera (temporarily) to produce a documentary.
The subject of the doc is another shooter, Chris Cuffaro, who is also directing the project and recently launched a "Greatest Hits" website with 100 of the most iconic images of his 30-year career. Among the highlights are black-and-white photos of Iggy Pop, Dave Navarro, Jane’s Addiction, George Michael, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rob Zombie, Gwen Stefani and many others. The website is the basis for an upcoming exhibition of his work, which will be on view later this year in Los Angeles.
The documentary will chronicle the creation of the exhibition, and tell not only Cuffaro’s story but also those behind his portraiture subjects. To fund the project, a campaign has been set up on crowdfunding site SeedAndSpark.com.
“I know a lot of people in adult and beyond,” said Avery, and he's hoping that will making funding go more smoothly. “We’ve had the campaign up for less than 24 hours and we’re almost 25 percent there. That’s what happens when you know people in the right places.”
The campaign will be up until August 17. Cuffaro is looking for funds for cameras, lighting, transportation, locations, travel, the crew and craft services. Of course there are incentives, including digital copies of the film, signed prints from the exhibition and an invitation to attend the opening. Find out more by clicking here.
