Philly Zoning Board Derails Plans for Strip Club

Plans to build a Scores strip club in a former meat packing plant were derailed when the Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustment rejected the plan Wednesday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Sebastian Hanson had sought to convert the former Bash adult dance club into a strip club just north of Independence Mall at 450 N. Sixth St. But board members were unmoved by the proposal after two raucous hearings last month where community members turned out, voicing their opposition to the proposal.

Hanson’s lawyer Joseph Beller argued that the proposed site was suitable location for the club, saying it was a superior use of the site zoned for limited industrial use. He explained that there were no homes within 100 feet of the property and that it was largely abandoned after dark.

But Matt Ruben, president of the Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association, claimed that development around the area and the current real estate boom had made the location inappropriate for a strip club.

Ruben argued that the proposed club would run counter to the area’s growth in residential construction.
