Director Paul Thomas says he's taking an informal survey among his "worst enemies." Thomas wants them to look at one of his latest films, Taxi Dancers and compare that to Looker which won AVN's award for Best Film last year.
"Looker is a perfectly serviceable film. It's nothing spectacular. But I'm so hard pressed to see the difference," says Thomas. What set Thomas off is the "6" rating Taxi Dancers got in the April AVN.
"If that is a 6, my name is Bill Margold. Right next to it [in AVN] was a little piece of shit that I did in two days. It got a 7. I know films well enough to know that some of the reviews are incorrect. It's tough to say something like that about something so subjective, but I think this is a real obvious one. Taxi Dancers [shot over 8 days] was a polished professional production. The reviewer even says the script should be given a nomination, this and that, but he gives it a 6."
Taxi Dancers, which stars Asia Carrera is about the world of taxi dancing intertwined with the murder mystery of Laura, a classic from the film noir era. "It's a very interesting movie," Thomas says. "Asia is a taxi dancer, and Mickey G. is a detective investigating a murder in a taxi dancing club."
"Why is my judgment of Taxi Dancers so different from AVN's?" Thomas asks. "God bless his heart, but it's so difficult seeing Tommy Byron, who's very good at what he does, get five A's for what he does everytime. The person going to a video store might want to see a movie like Taxi Dancers. He might not get to see it [because of a low review].
"I wish I didn't have to give a shit about something like this, but I do."
