New Video Editing, Encoding From Basement Broadcasting

Basement Broadcasting is looking to make a foothold in the adult Internet by way of offering Webmasters video editing and encoding services in several formats and file sizes, giving modem and high-speed viewers alike a better viewing experience and Webmasters a chance for better member retention and satisfaction.

That's only part of the operating philosophy of creator-chief executive Frank McGuigan, who created Basement Broadcasting exactly where its name suggests, after three years of working the adult Internet following a career in government work.

"I didn't want to get into the standard fucking and sucking," McGuigan told AVNOnline.com September 20. "The Webmaster video editing is sort of a selling, it had to be developed in order to edit and encode our own videos or videos we bought, and it grew out of that."

McGuigan launched Basement Broadcasting, too, as a hoped-for revenue generator for his operation until his small group of niche Websites begin to pay for themselves, including fetish, gay, and other niche sites. But he said that that wasn't enough just to jump into video editing and encoding..

"We can't compete with all the big folks that were there ahead of us and have the money," McGuigan said. "But there are only so many ways of doing the [sex]. So once you're working on dealing with your own videos and getting them on the Net, determining the best format and what's the best size, you discover that members like to be able to jump around.

"And if you've got your videos cut into clips, and go right to the end, stop in the middle, you ensure that everybody gets access to their videos," he continued. "We also ensure that we have an MPEG version because that's something you can be pretty confident that somebody's going to be able to see it, because AVI is a great format but it is also such a large file."

Basement Broadcasting will create clips or galleries for paysites, produce other formats from existing videos including AVI, .mpg, .wmv, and others, edit raw video to remove unwanted portions, create trailers for site tours, and add logos and URLs, as well as re-sizing videos for dialup and broadband viewing alike.

"I was looking for something that I could operate out of my own place," McGuigan said. "I've worked in traditional environments prior, and had been retired, and was just looking to make some money on the Internet. And it seemed like the only sure bet at the time [I started] was the adult business."

The idea for Basement Broadcasting, he said, came to him while walking a beach on Prince Edward Island a few years back. "I didn't want to have to commute to work, I wanted to just operate my access on the Internet doing something, and the adult business seemed to be where it was," he said.

"For me it was a voyage of discovery," McGuigan continued. "It's income while waiting for the sites to pay and those require a fair amount of money to construct. I see my principle business as trying to make money on the Internet. One does that by finding what the users out there want to see and it's so huge, there's so many people in it, you've got to be pretty selective. Where are we going to drill down? Where are we going to invest some money? I'm imagining this is what oil exploration might have been in some romantic era of exploration, some independents putting down wells and looking for that gusher, hoping for that big strike."

McGuigan likes his involvement in the adult Internet, for the most part, and said that his first customers for video editing and encoding have been satisfied with the work.

"It still remains promising," he said. "I find it's engaging. And contrary to what I've heard, it's been a very positive experience in terms of the people I've dealt with. In my other life, I dealt with a broad range of folks who varied greatly in their trustworthiness, but by and large I found [adult] like any business. I've met some really fine people and count a number as friends as a result."
