After earning his chops with surprisingly high-profile directing jobs for fashion-oriented shows in the mainstream world, Marty Zion decided to try his hand at porn “so I could make it the way I wanted to see it.”

Of course Zion isn’t willing to disclose his mainstream credits, a common practice for those who work on the both sides of the Valley.
What he is willing to talk about is Shades of Red, Zion’s first adult video for Nectar Entertainment, a new studio staffed mostly by people working both sides of the entertainment industry.
Shades of Red was chosen as the title of the video, not only for the obvious inclusion of red color schemes that weave in and out of the video, but also to represent the moods and emotions of the scenes. “Its shades of what a woman is. All that she’s about. The different levels of intensity and the look of the picture. That’s where the name comes from,” Zion told AVN.com.
Choosing to describe the style as “eroticore,” rather than the term artcore that has been used to describe similar content, Shades of Red has five scenes shot in a warehouse that included a variety of sets created to provide visual layers that frame each sex scene, intended to present an idealized form of sex, rather than the more documentary standard of the industry.
“We’re not trying to capture people having sex – we’re trying to capture a moment,” Zion said. “We want to give a visceral experience through this type of porn instead of making you feel like you’re the third person in the room and that you shouldn’t be there.”
Zion takes the time to cast the right people with the right look. “They have to be right for the part. The guys are all good looking and the girls are all beautiful. It’s a fantasy world,” he said.
The cast of Shades of Red includes a variety of newcomers and veterans: Cytherea, Paulina, Isabella, Phoenix Ray, Natalia Woods, Mia Smiles, Lauren Phoenix, Matt Bixel, Chris Cannon, John West, Billy Tyler.
Acting skills aren’t a requirement, as Zion avoids the use of dialogue, setting up his scenes visually. “I like the idea of situations that pull people into the scene. I don’t want to distract people from the scene by making them sit through bad acting, so I opted for no dialogue and original music,” he explained.
Zion’s favorite scene in his first adult video is with Cytherea, who squirts during her climax. “Cytherea cums like a maniac. Our camera guy was right there and he just about got soaked,” Zion said.
“We’ve had some unbelievable experiences. I feel really honored to be part of all this considering the way that it is going. I have to give my post team a lot of credit because its won and lost there,” Zion added.
Shade of Red has no anal or double penetrations, but does have three-ways, boy/girl and girl/girl scenes, as well as the squirting scene. The title streets on October 13th in both VHS and DVD formats.
