NJ Films Distributing Three Alex deRenzy Titles

NJ Films is just over a year old, but that didn’t prevent one of their titles from receiving an AVN Award nomination in the Best Classic DVD category. That’s because the company owns the rights to three titles by the legendary adult director Alex deRenzy, including 2005 AVN Award nominee Slave to Love.

John Knowles, co-owner of NJ Films, bought the rights to DeRenzy’s final three features shortly after his death in 2001, but didn’t release all of them on DVD until last year.

“We held on to them for a very long time before they went on DVD. We knew we were going to start the company and we wanted to save it for that,” Knowles told AVN.com.

According to Knowles, Slave to Love, Two Women, and Virgin Dreams, deRenzy’s final project, were first offered to his then-boss Mike Rubinstein of Devil’s Films. It was Rubinstein who suggested that Knowles, by then a salesman at Devil’s Films, buy the rights to the videos in question, which were at the time only available on VHS.

“Those titles have done unbelievably well for me and they’re still moving unbelievably well. I get orders for those on a daily basis,” Knowles said.

Knowles suggests deRenzy fans might like NJ Films new releases, which were shot in what Knowles describes as a deRenzy style. “Our director Dick is a huge deRenzy fan. He watched every single movie deRenzy ever did at Rosebud. And Dick was able to work with deRenzy at Rosebud on a couple of titles and that was like a dream come true for him.

“In my opinion you’ll see deRenzy’s style in Dick’s work. It’s not the same, but there are so many similarities between their styles. I love the product we put out.”
