Museum of Sex to Hold First Annual Fundraiser

The Museum of Sex will host its first annual gala benefit at The Angel Orensanz Foundation Center on Wednesday, May 16.

Honorary Chairs Allan Cumming and Perez Hilton and a host of celebrities from the world of art, sex education, fashion, music and film worked with the Museum to organize the event. Proceeds from the evening will go to The Muse Foundation of New York, a non-profit charity that supports the museum in its mission to collect materials relating to the history, evolution and cultural significance of human sexuality.

The inaugural bash will feature performances from burlesque dancer and pinup model Dita Von Teese and up-and-coming band Dragonette, as well as music by DJ Elle. A live auction will offer guests the opportunity to bid on "experience packages" including a walk-on movie role, a luxury getaway and an evening on the town with a surprise celebrity.

Located on Fifth Avenue and 27th Street in Manhattan, the Museum of Sex opened its doors in October 2002 with the award-winning exhibit NYC Sex: How New York City Transformed Sex in America. To date, the museum has hosted seven on-site exhibitions and three online interactive projects. Current exhibits include Action: Sex and the Moving Image and Kink: Geography of the Erotic Imagination.

"I think that the Museum of Sex has been facing what any progressive sexuality-based organization would face in attempting to go mainstream," said Femme Productions founder Candida Royalle, who is on the museum's Board of Advisors and is serving as co-chair of the event. "They are doing a great thing by creating a serious museum around sexuality in a major city; their exhibits are academic, educational and also very exciting. They're getting great response, but they're also facing an uphill battle because it has to do with sex. So they got a terrific young marketing and press person who suggested doing a fundraiser like every other foundation tends to do. They were selecting people to help chair the event and they asked me if I would be on the committee as one of the chairpersons, and I thought it was extremely worthwhile."
