Mobile Video Website Bypasses Carriers

Freeclippz.com, a new website offering free mobile videos by Internet download, has become the first website to offer high-quality video to mobile users without using a mobile network for delivery, parent company Clippz says.

The site is the first to be based on the new Clippz Cascade solution, which allows broadcasters and webmasters to deliver high-quality video content to more than 100 million mobile users worldwide, regardless of whether they use second-generation, 2.5-generation, or third-generation phones.

Freeclippz.com contains video clips of up to a few minutes in length which have been encoded at a variety of speeds, including some that are twice as fast as average 3G video clips. Users select their phone from a list and are presented with videos that are specifically tailored to the capabilities of their handset.

Once downloaded, users can transfer the videos to their phones using Bluetooth or USB. There is no software to install onto the phone, as the videos are all compatible with the built-in video players in each of the handsets. The only thing the customer needs is a simple decoding tool available for free download from the Freeclippz website.

Clippz Chief Executive Officer Philip John says he believes the Freeclippz site will be the first of many to use the Clippz Cascade solution as an alternative to traditional delivery through a carrier.

“I think that this is a pivotal moment in the development of mobile video,” John says. “Until now we’ve been limited by what the mobile carriers can deliver and what they choose to deliver. The Cascade solution rewrites the rules on video quality and can deliver it to a far greater audience, whether [users] have 2G or 3G handsets. It also allows the content providers to establish direct contact with the customer and removes the mobile carrier as the middleman.”

The higher video speeds Cascade supports means image quality and frame rate are typically higher than 3G speeds. John adds.

“Usually you find that a higher-quality product is more exclusive than a lower-quality one,” he says. “With Cascade, it’s the other way around. It’s the highest quality available, and it also has the largest potential audience.”

Although Freeclippz.com does not contain adult material, it is indicative of the quality that could be achieved by adult webmasters with their own content.

John will be speaking about his company’s products at Cybernet Expo in San Diego on June 10.

Cascade is Clippz’s second product, following closely behind Studio, which was launched in April. Studio is a consumer application that allows people to convert their own videos and transfer them to their phones.
