Meadowlands Zoning Proposal Stirs Controversy

E. RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The East Rutherford Borough Council has introduced an ordinance that would create a specialized zone, accommodating a number of adult-oriented businesses including strip clubs, massage parlors, porn retail stores and tattoo shops, according to a recent report.

The prospective ordinance passed on the first reading last week, and now has to be approved by the Planning Board — a process that could take months — and then the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, because of its proximity to the storied sports arena.

Mayor James Cassella told The Record of Bergen County the ordinance is needed to prevent adult businesses from opening near schools and homes.

Some New Jersey residents are not happy about the proposed zone. Ronald Crane, a resident of five years, told the New Jersey Herald News that an urban location might be more suited to the adult zone. "Put it in Passaic or Paterson or Newark, where it's already ruined," Crane said. "Where they already have these things, put it there. Why ruin a nice community like this?"

However, other residents were not upset at the proposition. Local barber Carlos Echeverry told the Herald News that the zone is "already here, it's not going to make a difference. As long as it doesn't affect any of the businesses here, the citizens in this area, and they stay away from the schools and kids, it's fine."
