Maverick Entertainment Subject of Fraudulent Letter

Los Angeles police are investigating a fraudulent letter that was sent to at least five distributors of Maverick Entertainment DVDs that was written on official stationery of the L.A. City Attorney’s office. It claimed the adult company was being prosecuted for a bogus violation.

According to Stanley Stone, attorney for Maverick Entertainment, the letter describes a false criminal complaint filed against Maverick for violating a penal code section that is “incorrect and doesn’t apply to anything.” It also falsely accuses Maverick of using underage performers in its movies, Stone said.

Stone told AVN.com that the letter tells distributors to stop distributing Maverick products and also suggests destroying what’s left in their inventory.

“We’ve informed [the L.A. City Attorney’s office] and they’ve turned it over to the police. This is a serious matter,” Stone said. “The letter was dated November 1. I’ve been informed that at least five people have gotten this letter.”

Stone said the potential charges for the sender would be “at least mail fraud and probably forgery.”

“I know that the city attorney is not happy with this. It’s a phony letter on their stationery,” he said. “… It’s obviously written by someone who is not very bright. The language and grammar speak for itself. Now it’s up to the police. I know they are actively investigating it.”

Stone said Maverick, which is continuing on its normal course of business, became aware of the letter on Wednesday. Maverick produces both straight and gay productions.
