Maui Wrapup and Observations

Some points of action came out of the Maui Conference including the pursuit of a centralized credit bureau initiative to tackle bad debt problems. One of the common problems faced by manufacturers and distributors alike are chrnonic customer accounts that habitually stiff the industry, and it was felt with the ability to tap into payment histories, bad accounts could be weeded out.

Content of adult tapes [i.e., urination, fisting, etc.] always being an issue, a committee was set up to organize an informtion system that would provide retailers a rundown of a tapes' contents in order to make purchase decisions.

It was also felt that a strong political message on behalf of First Amendment issues, get out this year prior to the November elections.

Besides assuming a more pro-active leadership stance with the benefit of a full-time executive director, The Free Speech Coaliton will broaden its causes and get behind high-profile and precedent-setting First Amendment cases.

Though nothing was written in stone, Scotsdale, Arizona was brought up as one possibility to hold next year's conference. John Stagliano suggested alternate east-coast/west coast locations in subsequent years to encourage broader industry participation.

Particularly thanks to Goalie Entertainment, Vivid, Great Western and Doc Johnson for sponsoring great evenings-out for the conference members. The group got to sample cuisine at such local stomping grounds as Roy's, Carellis on the Beach and David Paul's Lahaina Grill.
