Mass. Anti-Webcam Peep Bill Goes to Governor

Massachusetts is now one gubernatorial signature away from outlawing secret videotaping of movies or people undressing.

The state Legislature sent the bill to Gov. Mitt Romney November 10, with supporters saying it will fight both film piracy and Web sites who make their living largely on showing video voyeurism.

The latter portion of the bill was sponsored by state Sen. Susan Fargo, whose spokesman Don Siriani told reporters his boss knew of instances where even landlords put cameras in bathrooms and bedrooms and the courts made police return those tapes.

"There are literally thousands of Web sites that market nothing but images of women undressed," he told reporters.

The bill going to Romney would ban such secret peeptaping and distributing such images, with violators looking at two and a half years behind bars or a $10,000 fine. It's part of a larger bill pushed heavily by the film industry to fight further online film piracy.
