Malaysia Cracking Down on E-Porn

Reports that Malaysian citizens could access 1.5 million adult Internet sites thrilled the government so much it's moving to crack down on access to adult materials via the Net.

Published reports indicated the government already has imposed restrictions on its own agencies, with schools to follow and other measures under consideration. The country's education minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, said school computers would be fitted with filtering software.

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak announced the Net would not be censored in the so-called Multimedia Super Corridor, a local haven for high-tech companies, but restrictions would be extended beyond government agencies to other unspecified places.

"We are worried by the presence of these Web sites on the Internet," Razak was quoted as saying. "While we accept the use and application of modern technology, the downside of technology needs to be considered too."
