MAJOR CRITIC SPEAKS AT EAST COAST VID SHOW

Nationally respected film critic Jeffrey Lyons is expected to speak on "marketing the hidden treasures" of the DVD format at October's East Coast Video Show in Atlantic City.

The show also includes the largest adult entertainment section in the business, sponsored by AVN.

Diane Stone of Adstar Communications, co-producers of the East Coast Video Show, says Lyons's position as one of the nation's most popular and knowledgeable film critics means he will offer a unique perspective on the DVD world. "Retailers in attendance will not only enjoy Jeffrey's stories about the film industry," she says, "but will get some useful tips on marketing both classic and current DVD titles to their customers."

Lyons is scheduled to appear during a three-hour show preview on 4 October. Most likely, Adstar says, his focus will be on how, with only a few film facts, retailers can make money by marketing DVDs successfully. New York's Video Room's Michael Becker and Rich Thorward of the Movie Monitor will also introduce the convention lineup, including seminar sessions and exhibit highlights, and discuss late-breaking video industry news.

The opening session will also feature an open discussion, with those attending concentrating on immediate industry issues of the day, including revenue-sharing for independents, copy depth, and new technologies.

The convention is being organized by way of Home Video Entertainment Events, a joint venture between Advanstar and the Video Software Dealers Association. Exhibits open Tuesday, 5 October, and Wednesday, 6 October, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Thursday, 7 October, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

It's considered the largest gathering of retailers in the East Coast video industry, with experts on video, DVD, and CD-ROM software among others set to appear.

Pre-registration is $35, with a $20 fee for VSDA members, Advanstar says. For more information on exhibiting at the convention, contact Janet Gillis, (714) 513-8682. For information on attending, call (888) 778-8892, or visit the East Coast Video Show web site at www.ecvshow.com
