Let Porn Into England, Censor Says

It's time for Great Britain to legalize hardcore pornography because the current system of banning it is only making things worse, according to the country's chief censor. \n James Fernan, 67, made the recommendation this week as part of his last annual report as director of the British Board of Film Classification, a position he is leaving this year. If his proposal is adopted, it would open the door to millions of dollars of sales for U.S. porn producers. \n Fernan said that, by making regular hardcore porn illegal, the government only managed to encourage the growth of a black market that dealt in far more obscene material, including videos with children, animals and violence. He said he considered the influx of these videos to be his biggest failure during his 23 years in office. \n he country's chief film censor said he was not suggesting that there be no rules governing pornographic videos, only that they be legalized and regulated. \n Now, he said, the government is concentrating only on what is easy to control, thereby allowing there to be a huge amount of truly violent porn, much of it sold out of car trunks and market stalls. \n Fernan's tenure has been marked by criticism from both the left and the right. Liberals condemned the cuts he ordered in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and the more mature rating he gave to Mrs. Doubtfire because of perceived sexual innuendo. Conservatives were angered by his decision to allow movies such as Lolita, Natural Born Killers and Crash to be shown in the United Kingdom. \n Last year, Fernan announced a plan to relax regulations on softcore porn sold to adults in sex shops. The plan was scrubbed, however, after Home Secretary Jack Straw raised vehement objections. At the time, Fernan accused Straw of pandering to the puritanical vote. \n his week, it didn't take long for conservatives to condemn Fernan's recommendation. Roger Gale, vice chairman of the Conservative Party's culture, media and sports committee, likened Fernan's suggestion to the proposals to make marijuana and heroin legal because so many people use it. Gale said it is just giving in to the problem. \n What's more, Gale warned, the appetite for porn feeds on itself. People who use it will only want more and harder forms. Legalizing hardcore porn will only accelerate demand for it, he said.
