Lazie Days

How do you go from being a bass player with a world renowned rock band to manager of XPW world champion, Sabu the wrestler? Lazie, formerly of Danzig, explains the weird migration that not only landed him into the ultra weird world of professional wrestling but got him the post as general manager of Extreme Associates as well. nnG. Ross: "Last time I spoke to you, you were in the middle of an Adam Film World interview. What was that all about?" nnLazie: "I'm doing a pro-am series called New Blood and they wanted to interview me for amateur porn. We did the interview, but they wouldn't print anything I said. They sent me a copy of the interview and nothing I said was in print. You know how we are over here. We're very outspoken and not scared to let people know our opinion. In the interview, I tore some people to shreds and they were scared to print it. I told them to pull the fucking interview. But they changed the interview." nnG. Ross: "How long have you been shooting porn?" nnLazie: "About six, seven months." nnG. Ross: "How did you and Rob Black hook up?" nnLazie: "I did the soundtrack for a porn documentary called Daddy, Make Me a Star. That was done from Lisa Rawlins and Sharon Mitchell. I liked Rob's movies and Rob did an interview for that movie. Then we ran into each other a while back, and then at Night of the Stars. Then I went to one of the XPW shows. Then we started talking. One thing led to another, and here I am. To make a long story short, I started helping out with the wrestling and he said why don't you shoot a movie. I'm a photographer and I went to NYU for film. I said whatthefuck, why not?" nnG. Ross: "How's the rock connection fit in?" nnLazie: "My whole family is pretty much in music. My mom was a jazz singer, a pretty famous jazz singer and r&b singer. I always grew up around music and it was always my first love. At one point in my life I wanted to do film. That's what I really wanted. I went to NYU and just continued playing music. My heart's in music, too, but comes a time when you just need a break. Right now I'm taking a break. Pretty much everything I've wanted to do, musically, I've done. I've played in front of hundreds of thousands of people and made records and was on the road almost five years straight. I got a little burnt out?" nnG. Ross: "Did you join Danzig in progress?" nnLazie: "Yes. I played in a lot of other bands like local L.A. punk rock bands from the early 1970's to the late 80's, along with some New York punk rock bands. I joined Danzig in progress. I also used to do a lot of studio work with jazz sessions and stuff. I was with Danzig six years and it was great. When their drummer left my cousin got the job as their drummer. I knew Glenn [Danzig] probably since the early '80's. Then when the bass player left he said why don't you come play bass." nnG. Ross: "Is the rock n' roll life everything that it's cracked up to be?" nnLazie: "It can be. Is the of a porn star everything we read about and dream about? No. It can be, but back in the eighties, definitely. It was very decadent, and doing champagne enemas and all that type of stuff." nnG. Ross: "So you do bring a certain culture to this whole thing." nnLazie: "Definitely. There's a couple of young directors out there, but there's not much creativeness out there. Everything's the same old thing: boy, girl, fuck; boy, boy, girl, fuck. I want to start putting some kind of twist on porn, shoot it different and tell some kind of story. I know when people watch porno they don't want to hear a story, but I think the next film I'm going to do is more for the people in the industry than the pervert at home." nnG. Ross: "You're first tape is called New Blood?" nnLazie: "It just got released. It's a spinoff of a seventies movie called Scared Straight. You might be too young to remember that." nnG. Ross: "I wrote about the Great Flood, the seventies I can handle." nnLazie: "The burning bush...Gene Ross, reporting for AVN, saw the burning bush." nnG. Ross: "We were a newsletter back then...so who's in New Blood?" nnLazie: "Ryan Connor, Casey, Kennedy, Angel, Alexis Tyler, Donita, Jack Hammer and the man himself, Luciano. These are all pretty much new girls. It was pretty easy to do, all the girls were easy to work with. They did what I asked them to do and there were no complications. When you're working with Luciano, you don't have to tell Luciano what to do. The guy's so great. He knows how to perform. Donita is fucking wild. You don't have to coerce her into anything. You put the camera on it and let it run. We had fun. It's hardcore and very degrading and very mentally disturbing, but everybody who shot it was definitely happy. It kind of accomplished its mission. One of the girls who did the scene said, you were right, this isn't the business for me." nnG. Ross: "How did you jump into the starring role as general manager at Extreme?" nnLazie: "Rob knows the type of person I am. I'm pretty much a call it like I see it, take no shit type of person. That's what we need over here. It's no big mystery that we get a bad rap." nnG. Ross: "The bad boy image." nnLazie: "Yeah. There's no such thing as bad press. They're talking good or they're talking bad, they're still talking. That's one thing about Extreme Associates, people can't stop talking about us, love us or hate us." nnG. Ross: "So, are you kicking shit AND taking names or just kicking shit?" nnLazie: "Kicking shit and taking names. Definitely. [Lazie mentions a certain person who's high on his list.] If you ever hear me say I'm part of the MTV generation, just fucking shoot me. Kill me on the spot. Tell me to pack it up and go home. MTV? Jesus Christ, tt's like calling yourself a baker and making rice cakes. You got a mouthful of something but there's nothing there, no flavor." nnG. Ross: "What was first on your list of things to do as GM?" nnLazie: "I wanted to bring the name of Extreme, movie-wise, back to everybody, to get everybody talking about the movies again. Rob is pretty much done with directing; he's not completely done, but he doesn't want to do movies anymore. He's doing the wrestling-thing. The deal we made when I came over is he wanted me to take over. I wrote scripts and stuff and he said this is the kind of shit we want. It's cutting edge; it's controversial and it's good sex. I want my movies to be like porno-cult movies, like Greg Dark's. Gregory Dark in my opinion singlehandedly changed the face of pornography....New Wave Hookers...his movies were so ahead of their time even though he didn't have the tools that we do now. Those movies are amazing. The guy's a genius when it comes to that shit and he was like what Rob is now, he got blasted by everybody. No one really got it, but you see it's great shit. That's my main task - to bring the cutting-edge back to pornography with thought in it. Not like some bullshit Max Hardcore movie. How long does it take him to think up something brilliant like I'm going to come on a tooth brush and make a girl brush her teeth with it? That's two minutes of thought. I would love to be the next Greg Dark. The guy is genius. He was not for everybody's taste, and all my movies are not going to be for everybody's taste. I want the people who are going to watch them and be able to pop for every scene." nnG. Ross: "Albeit Rob being involved in wrestling, aren't you wrestling-struck? After all, you're Sabu's manager...are you going to juggle all the balls?" nnLazie: "I'm doing fine, now. I don't mind working. I like to work and get the job done. My name in the music industry is gold. People know I come and don't leave until I get the job done the way you want it done. It's not that big a deal, especially when I enjoy what I'm doing. I enjoy the pornography and I love doing the wrestling. I love managing Sabu. I love that the guy I manage has the XPW heavyweight title around his waste." nnG. Ross: "So what's Sabu really like?" nnLazie: "Sabu is really Sabu. He's a fucking maniac. He refuses to speak to people, and people always get the wrong impression. They think he's a mute. He's not a mute, he just refuses to talk. He/'s not like it's my job to talk, it's not my job to get in the ring and beat the fuck out of people. Which is great." nnG. Ross: "Is the Extreme re-awareness getting back on track?" nnLazie: "Definitely. We're trying. With me and Luis Cypher it'll definitely be back on track. Tommy's movies don't even need an explanation. Everybody knows you're getting a Tom Byron movie you're getting, hands down, some of the best pornography out there - just straight-up, gonzo pornography. Luciano's movies are the same, Lucky Ladies or Whacks That Ass, you're getting great pornography that you can crank to. Where Cypher and I come in we're giving you what's not for everybody. If somebody has my porno movie in their house I don't want it to be in their closet. I want it to be right next to their VCR so when their friends come in, they're like, dude, you gotta see this shit." nnG. Ross: "It's when it lands on the coffee table that you've arrived." nnLazie: "Exactly." nnG. Ross: "The rumors have you romantically involved with Kristi Myst, is this true?" nnLazie: "Yes. Me and Kristi and definitely romantically involved. We're taking a little break right now." nnG. Ross: "I heard at one point you were engaged." nnLazie: "I don't know about that. Kristi is a phenomenal woman. She's great and she's definitely a flower in a junk yard in this industry. She's a pro. She comes in, she does her scenes. She doesn't take her work home with her, and I don't bring mine home with me. It's great." nnG. Ross: "From conversations with Rob and Tom I get the impression that they're going to steer away from any new contract girls but were not ruling out the possibility." nnLazie: "We're not in the market for contract girls. We got our two girls, and Lizzy just directs. We're not looking for any more. The thing about Extreme is that it's like a fucking family." nnG. Ross: "Albeit the Manson family." nnLazie: "Yeah. It's like a cross between the Manson Family and the Partridge Family. All the talent of the Partridge Family and the looks and attitude of the Mansons. It's good stuff. Here in this office it's not for everybody. You have to have a very strong constitution to be an Extreme person.
